Aggie Lady Classic
Ags batter SW Missouri for 66-44 ivin
By TONY GALLUCCI
Battalion Sports Editor
Four Agies scored in double fi
gures as the women s basketball
team outshot, outraced, outlucked
and outsmarted the Bears of South
west Missouri State University to the
tune of 66-44 in the final Tuesday
game of the Aggie Lady Classic.
The gals started out slowly, lag
ging behind 17-10 and 19-12 early in
the first half. “We just weren’t play
ing aggressive,” said head coach
Cherri Rapp following the game.
“But Lola Baker started hitting from
outside and Lisa Hughes played well
to help us on.”
Baker connected on seven of her
nine shots from the field and hit both
of her free throws to lead the Ags
with 16 points. Hughes added 10 as
did Peggy Pope. Lori Foreman was
second high for A&M with 12 points.
After hitting a miserable 28.6 per
cent from the floor in the first half,
A&M came out prtessing to up their
halftime total of 24 (SWMSU had 25)
to 48-29 in a furious first ten minutes
of the second half. The break came
with 15 minutes remaining when
Foreman and Hughes connected
from outside and the Lady Ags ran off

Rockets
over
Cleveland
United Press International
RICHFIELD, Ohio — Moses
Malone lets his actions on the basket
ball court “speak” for him.
The 6-10 center poured in 40
points, including seven of Houston’s
nine overtime points, to spark the
Rockets to a 118-115 NBA victory
Tuesday night over the Cleveland
Cavaliers and snap the Rockets’
road-game losing streak at seven.
“No comment,” was all Malone
would say after logging 45 minutes of
action and grabbing 21 rebounds.
After spotting a 17-point lead in
the second period, the Rockets
bounced back to outscore the Cavs
30-18 in the third period. The score
was then tied nine times in the fourth
quarter before Malone sent the game
into an extra five-minute session
with a layup with 14 seconds left on
the clock.
“Malone is a money basketball
player. They go to him in the clutch
and he delivers,” said Cleveland
coach Stan Albeck.
He did just that in the overtime
period after Mike Mitchell stuffed a
shot to put Cleveland on top 111-109
with only 20 seconds gone. Malone
followed with a pair of jumpers and
Mike Dunleavy hit a driving layup to
give the Rockets a four-point bulge.
Gagers even
road record
In holiday action, the men’s bas
ketball team won four of five road
games, and one at home to boost
their record to 10-5. Two tourna
ments were involved, the Ags taking
first place in the Rebel Classic in Las
Vegas and second in the Pillsbury
Classic in Minneapolis.
TEXAS A&M 97 NTSU 56
The Ags blasted the North Texas
State mean Green in the first round
of the Rebel Classic. Twelve Aggies
scored with Vernon Smith hitting 23
and Rynn Wright collecting 18.
Steve Sylestine blistered the back-
board, hitting seven of seven from
the floor for 14 points in his best
outing of the year. On the boards, 12
players also contributed with fresh
man Claude Riley pulling down 11.
TEXAS A&M 77 UN-LA VEGAS 73
Texas A&M took the title from the
Runnin’ Rebels on the strength of
David Britton’s 30 points and six
assists. Wright tossed in 14, Rudy
Woods 11 and Smith 10 to help hand
Las Vegas its first-ever loss in this
tournament. Britton was named
Most Valuable player.
TEXAS A&M 70 LOYOLA 69
Rynn Wright crammed in 26
points and Smith added 23 as the Ags
played just good enough to win the
opener of the Pillsbury Classic.
MINNESOTA 69 TEXAS A&M 63
Just good enough wasn’t good
enough as All-America Kevin
McHale of the Golden Gophers
dropped in 21 points, collected 13
caroms and blocked four shots to lead
the winners. Smith and Britton had
18 points each for A&M. Smith and
Wright were named to the All
tourney team.
10 unanswered points. The biggest
Ag lead was 22 which held for the
final margin.
“This was the best our press has
looked all year,” said Rapp. “We just
couldn’t seem to hit the first half, but
did better the second. We hadn’t
played in three weeks, so we played
quite well. Well have to,be ready
tomorrow night, Memphis St. is one
of the better teams here,” she said.
