When Pioneer 11 approached Saturn
and its spectacular rings last Septem-

Contact with the instrument-
packed spacecraft was lost Thursday
during a trimming maneuver. Radio
controllers were not sure what
caused the difficulty.
It was earlier assumed the spacec
raft failed to turn its big antenna to
ward Earth completely after making
a slight course change, the spokes
man said, but now engineers and sci
entists can read the data in the
spacecraft’s computers to see what
went wrong.
Voyager 1 is en route to a flyby of
the ringed planet Saturn in Novem
ber. Last March it took the first
close-up, high resolution pictures of
Jupiter and its moon system.
