DALLAS — Ten of the 128 faculty and staff members of Dali*
Baptist College could lose their jobs because they did not sign a;
“Articles of Faith” statement saying they consider the Bible accunt;
and believe in the non-evolutionary view of creation.
Employees of the college — from the president to janitors—wer-
required to sign the seven-page “Articles of Faith” by last Tuesdays
their contracts will not be renewed in May, said Vice PresidentTfo
mas J. Rector.
Some of those who did not sign the document have said they want
discuss it with college President Marvin Watson. At least two®
ployees said they would not sign.
The oath, similar to a statement adopted by the Southern
Convention in 1963, was part of a move to make the 1,000-studrt
college “more Bible-oriented than any school in the area,” saidreligii
professor Dr. William E. Bell.
Two of the most disputed portions of the statement involve (In»-
inerrancy of the Bible and evolution, stating, “We affirm our belieftliiB
man was created by a direct act of God in His image, notfn»r
previously existing creatures. ” _ —■
The pledge requirement was adopted at a November meeting oft
school’s trustees, headed by Dr. W.A. Criswell of the First Baptu
Church.
