Protester

United Press International
KEENE, N.H. — An anti
nuclear demonstrator got into a
shoving match with former Texas
Gov. John Connally’s body guards,
but the Republican presidential
candidate waited until he had a
crowd before delivering a verbal
counterpunch.
The demonstrator confronted
Connally as he strolled Main Street
Monday, shaking hands and trying
to pick up votes.
The protester attempted to de
bate Connally on his pro-nuclear
stance, but the candidate, after a
brief verbal exchange, chose to keep
on moving.
According to eyewitnesses, the
protester then engaged in a brief
shoving match with Connally’s body
shoves
guards
guards. There were no arrests and
no one was hurt.
But the protester showed up later
when Connally addressed about 300
students- at Keene State College.
The protester went on at length
about the evils of nuclear power and
claimed Connally had told him on
the street that no one had ever died
because of nuclear power.
“What I told you was last year, no
lives were lost in the nuclear power
field, Connally shot back, adding
that a lot of coal miners died last
year.
When the protester continued to
badmouth nuclear power and its ef
fect on the environment, Connally
drew hearty applause by saying,
“Cold, hungry and out of work is the
worst kind of environment. ”

BATON ROUGE, La. — Final machine-verified
results in the governor’s election showed Repbuli-
can Dave Treen defeated Democrat Louis Lambert
by 9,871 votes out of almost 1.4 million cast to be
come the state’s first Republican governor in more
than a century, the Treen camp said Tuesday.
“We are drinking champagne at the Treen head
quarters, said Treen press aide Maureen McAr
thur. “We have finished our tally and we think we
have won. We believe we have won and we are
popping the corks. ”
Treen and Lam be rt supporters tediously followed
clerks of court from machine to machine in all 64
parishes Tuesday to obtain the voting results that
will be presented to local election boards for verifi
cation as the official count. The Lambert workers
went through the motions but were resigned to de
feat early in the day.
Staffers at the Treen headquarters answered tele
phones by saying “Governor-elect Treen’s office. ”
Telephones at the Lambert headquarters werel
