Dr. Walter Bradley, a mechanical engineering professor, analyzed the Houston pipeline for the Texas Rail road Commission’s Gas Utilities Di vision and blamed the failure on hyd rogen cracking in the pipe. Bradley said hydrogen cracking may occur when coating breakdown occurs, allowing moisture to contact the pipeline metal at a local hard spot. Much of the 106,000 miles of natu ral gas pipeline that crisscross the state have been in the ground 20-25 years, he said, so it is potentially more susceptible to failure.
