The night before Bonfire
wns the night before Bonfire, and all through the dorm
( /f[ Not a student was stirring, it wasn't the norm;
Xtf The textbooks were stacked on the desk with great care.
In hopes that the holidays soon would be there.
The coeds were nestled all snug in their beds.
While visions of passing grades danced in their heads;
And she over in her room and I in mine,
Had just settled down to think of good times —
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
1 sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.
Amy to the window I flew like a flash.
Tore open the curtain and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the now-dying grass
Gave a lustre of midday to all that did pass.
When what to my wondering eyes met with shock.
But a huge blocking sled and eight football jocks,
With a short little driver, so lively with charm
l knew in a moment it must be Coach Tom!
More rapid than eagles his players they came.
And he whistled and shouted and called them by name;
“Now, Jacob! now, David! now, Gerald and Pugy!
On, Woodard! on, Dickson! on, Grulich and Dickey!
Able to jump to great heights, able to knock down the walls!
Now run away, block them down, tackle them all!”
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the dorm roof the players they flew.
With a sleigh full of points — and Coach Tom Wilson, too.
And then in a twinkling I heard o'er my seat
The stomping and pounding of turf football cleats.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the hallway Coach Wilson came with a bound.
He was dressed in maroon from his head to his feet.
'L
Yet he looked like a veteran just beginning a season.
His eyes, how they twinkled! His dimples, how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth tvas drawn up like a bow.
And from the corner protruded a lit Marlboro.
The stump of the cig he held tight in his teeth.
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad, smiling face and a little, round belly
That shook, when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly.
He was chubby and short — yet still pretty fast.
And l laughed, when l saio him, in spite of his past.
A wink of his eye and a twist of his ear
Soon gave me to know an Ag win was quite near.
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work.
And promised a victory; then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his head.
And giving a wave, down the hallway he fled.
He sprang to the sled, to his boys gave a yell.
And away they all sped, like bats out of hell.
But I heard him exclaim, as they got near Cain Hall:
“BEAT THE HELL OUT OF TEXAS — Good night to you all!”

Tech’s Hadnot heads all-SWC team
United Press International
DALLAS — James Hadnot, who
led the Southwest Conference in
rushing for the second straight year,
and three members of the talented
University of Texas defensive back-
field highlighted the 1979 United
Press International all-Southwest
Conference football team
announced Wednesday.
Hadnot was one of six players to
repeat on the all-SWC team, having
piled up 1,371 yards this season de
spite Texas Tech’s disappointing
campaign.
In addition, Hadnot was named
offensive player of the year in the
SWC, Baylor linebacker Mike Sing
letary was chosen defensive player of
the year andTCU linebacker Darrell
Patterson led in the balloting for
freshman of the year.
The UPI all-conference team was
chosen by a panel of writers and
broadcasters who covered SWC
games this year.
Longhorns Johnnie Johnson, Der
rick Hatchett and Ricky Churchman
— members of what Texas’ assistant
athletic director Bill Ellington called
the best secondary he has ever seen
in college football — were all named
to the all-conference squad.
Texas has surrendered only 76.9
yards through the air this season and
it was the third year for Johnson to be
voted to th all-league team.
Joining Hadnot in the offensive
backfield were Texas running back
A.J. Jones, who will miss the Lon
ghorns final games of the season with
a knee injury, and Arkansas quarter
back Kevin Scanlon, who has com
pleted a remarkable 66 percent of his
passes this season.
Arkansas’ Robert Farrell, Texas’
Johnny “Lam” Jones and Longhorns
tight end Lawrence Sampleton
made up the receiving corps on the
all-conference team while the offen
sive line was made up of Greg Kolen-
da of Arkansas and Melvin Jones of
Houston at tackles, George Stewart
of Arkansas and Dennis Greenawalt
of Houston at guards and Texas’ Wes
Hubert at center.
Joining Hatchett, Churchman and
Johnson in the defensive backfield
was Kevin Evans of Arkansas. The
defensive line was made up of
Andrew Meltontree of Baylor and
Jacob Green of Texas A&M at ends,
Steve McMichael of Texas and
Hosea Taylor of Houston at tackles
and Robert Oglesby of Houston at
nose guard.
David Hodge of Houston joined
Singletary at the linebacking posi
tions. Arkansas punter Steve Cox
and place kicker Ish Ordonez both
won in the balloting at their posi
tions.
Neither SMU receiver Emanuel
Tolbert nor A&M running back Cur
tis Dickey, both of whom had been
selected to the all-conference team
in 1977 and 1978, were picked to this
year’s squad. They were second
team selections in this year’s bal
loting.
