and morel The procedure, which involved dropping a “bas-
'" ® H ket-like device” through a tube inserted in the shah’s
body, occurred at 10:30 p.m. Monday.
Sources at the hospital said it was doubtful Shah
roleum Mohammad Reza Pahlavi would be able to leave the
hospital Tuesday or Wednesday. They were unable
i an intenli) to estimate when his medical condition would allow
him to leave the United States.
One source said it was his “understanding that the
physicians, if they follow the medical program pre
viously outlined, would want to begin chemotherapy
treatments” at the hospital.
That, he said, could prolong the shah’s hospitaliza
tion indefinitely.

Former shah of Iran
gallstone removed
Ray Rebhann, the hospital spokesman, said the
gallstone — detected after the shah’s gallbladder was
removed Oct. 24 — “was located where expected
and crushed, permitting the extraction of several
fragments.”
The non-surgical procedure was conducted by Dr.
Joachim Burhenne, chief of the department of radiol
ogy at the University of British Columbia, assisted by
staff members of New York Hospital.
Burhenne, who has successfully completed 800
such operations, refused to discuss the shah’s case
directly.
The shah has completed a series of 10 radiation
treatments to diminish the size of several malignant
tumors in his neck. Rebhann said “the expected side
effects” from the radiation — inflammation of the
esophagus and pharynx and a high fever — “have
been brought under control.”
The hospital source said the reason doctors listed
the shah’s condition as guarded “was to hedge their
bets — to see if there are any side effects from the
crushing of the stone.”
The source said the shah’s physicians said they
would prefer to begin chemotherapy treatments at
the hospital, although the procedure is available
elsewhere, including Mexico.

Chops 'in the name of art’
Angry man hatchets fingers
United Press International
NEW YORK — Acting “in the
name of art,” a man who could not
get in immediately to see the art edi
tor of a tabloid, the SoHo Weekly
News, chopped off two of his fingers
with a hatchet in the newspaper’s
reception room.
The man, identified as Henry
Benvenuti, 27, of Manhattan, was
rushed Monday to Bellevue Hospital
where doctors tried but failed to
reattach the severed fingers through
microsurgery.
Doctors said extreme damage to
the circulatory system of the two fin
gers made it impossible to perform
the surgery on the fourth and fifth
fingers of Benvenuti’s left hand.
Carol Ash, publisher of the
Greenwich Village tabloid, said the
severed fingers were picked up by
police at the paper’s office, packed in
ice and rushed to the hospital.
Ash said, “This guy with dyed red
hair and dark leather clothes came in
about 11:45 this morning and asked
to see Gerald Marzorati, the art edi
tor. He wanted to rap about the art
world and said he had an appoint
ment with Gerry.”
The publisher said the reception
ist called Marzorati, who said “he
was writing on deadline and if he left
his name he’d get back to him in a
few hours. This guy got on the phone
to Gerry and said, ‘You’re just like all
the other art editors in this city.’
“Then, right in front of the recep
tionist,” Ash said, “he opened his
attache case, took out a small hatchet
and chopped off his fingers, dropped
everything and ran out the door.”
Police said Benvenuti told his taxi
driver to take him to the offices of the
city’s Department of Health, where
he was picked up by an ambulance.

United Press International
HASTINGS, Neb.— The father of
leukemia victim Chad Green has de
nied a report he and his wife want $1
| million for a book about their flight to
Mexico so their son could be treated
with Laetrile.
Gerald Green of Hastings, Mon-
r day referred to a Boston Globe story
quoting him as saying he and his
wife, Diana, rejected $100,000 from
one of the publishers competing for
book rights because “it’s worth a mil
lion.”
Green said he and his wife were
approached by a publishing agent
about the book but said no monetary
amount was discussed.
“We want Chad’s story to be told
because we think it is important to
the public,” Green said.
“So I said to the newspaper, as far
as we re concerned, Chad’s life was
worth more than a million to us. So
money doesn’t really matter.”
The 3-year-old boy died after his
parents decided to stop the che
motherapy treatments he was re
ceiving at a Tiajuana clinic, and treat
their son with Laetrille and a special
diet.
Green said funds gained from
publishing a book will go to the Chad
M. Green Foundation for cancer re
search.
