New York planned to fly to Houston
Monday.
Since declaring his free agentry,
Ryan had said he was interested in
playing for either Houston, the New
York Yankees, Texas or Milwaukee.
Brewers General Manager Harry
Dalton said he thought Ryan would
sign with Houston “because we ha
ven’t heard from him.”
Ryan, 32, lives in Alvin, 30 miles
from Houston.
His signing with Houston would
pair the major league’s two strikeout
kings. Richard fanned 313 batters
last season to lead the majors and
Ryan led the American League with
223 strikeouts.
Richard, 29, recently signed a
four-year extension of his contract.
Ryan would be the first free agent
signed by the Astros. The sale of the
team to millionaire shipbuilder
McMullen last spring made it possi
ble for the Astros to enter the free
agent market for the first time.

SAN ANTONIO — Scoring
champ George Gervin continued his
hot-shooting streak, scoring 33
points to pace San Antonio to a 136-
132 NBA victory over the New York
Knicks Thursday night.
Gervin, who has hit 67 percent of
his field goal attempts in his last four
games, made good on 13 of 21, in
cluding 21 first-half points.
Spur forward Larry Kenon added
29 points and 12 rebounds.
The Knicks, who have never won
in San Antonio, came out strong to
take a 36-34 lead after one quarter.
But the Spurs, behind Gervin and
center Billy Paultz, outscored New
York 39-31 in the second quarter to
take control of the game.

quarter points, six coming on free-

bama; Ohio State at Michigan; Iowa
State at Nebraska; Oklahoma at Mis
souri; Arkansas at Texas A&M; and
TCU at Texas.
Holmes said he would remain in
New Orleans, keeping in touch with
his representatives by telephone.
“I’ll be here with sweaty palms
until they call,” Holmes said.
