Horns-Coogs showdown set
United Press International
The next and perhaps last of the
Southwest Conference show-downs
of 1979 will be served up under the
plexiglass of the Astrodome next
Saturday night.
The options are easily de
ciphered.
If Houston beats Texas, the
Cougars will have all but wrapped
up their third Cotton Bowl trip in
four years.
If Texas beats Houston, things
will be wildly scrambled with the
conference championship and bowl
bid probably being left in doubt
until Dec. 2.
Whatever happens in Houston
Saturday night, both the fourth-
ranked Cougars and eighth-ranked
Longhorns ought to be emotionally
ready. They didn’t waste any last
weekend.
“Houston is just around the
corner,” said Texas coach Fred
Akers following his team’s 14-6
victory over Texas Tech. “To win
though we will have to be much bet
ter than we were in this one.”
And in Fort Worth where the
Cougars had plenty of trouble fight
ing off TCU 21-10, coach Bill
Yeoman looked at it this way:
“Well have to back off really good
and get emotionally keyed up and
be ready. You never like to say you
were looking ahead, but it was a
possiblity.”
The Houston-Texas game is just
one of two key games on the confer
ence menu next Saturday. During
the afternoon in Fayetteville,

ninth-ranked Arkansas, a 34-7 win
ner over Rice last weekend will
entertain 18th-ranked Baylor, hav
ing had last week off.
Both the Bears and Razorbacks
need a win to stay in title contention
since they each have one conference
loss and both will be pulling for a
Texas victory over Houston.
If Houston should defeat Texas,
the Cougars would have to lose both
of their final two games against
Texas Tech and Rice to miss out on
the Cotton Bowl.
A combination of Texas and Ar
kansas victories would leave Arkan
sas in the best position since — in
the event of a three-way tie between
the Cougars, Longhorns and Razor-
backs, the Hogs would go to the
Cotton Bowl because of the “last
visit rule.
A combination of Texas and
Baylor wins however would put
Texas in good condition — chiefly
because the Longhorns would have
beaten the Cougars and because Ar
kansas which beat Texas earlier in
the year, would have two confer
ence losses.
But that would also set up the
Baylor-Texas game Nov. 24 as a crit
ical meeting.
The Cougars can put a virtual end
to all of that speculation of course
and Houston is on one of the hottest
rolls in the school’s history. Even
though the Cougars did not play all
that well last week they won their
eighth straight game and moved to
within two victories of their all-time
winning streak.
Houston did not commit a turn
over against TCU, but did not put
the game away until the fourth quar
ter.

Defense was the name of the
game for the Dallas White Long
horns last week as they defeated
Dallas Wilson 42-7 and moved to
within one game of winning the
Class AAAA district championship
and a berth in this year’s post-season
playoffs.
“We were able to get the game
under control early and take con
trol,” said coach Harold Hill. “Wil
son played hard — it just couldn't
move the hall against our bigger and
stronger defense.
The Longhorns meet Hillcrest
this week and Thomas Jefferson in
the season finale. A win in either
game will clinch the district cham
pionship and a play-off berth.
Last week the Longhorn defense
allowed only five first downs. And
the offense actually gave up the
seven points, not the defense. Wil-
