In the before-dawn hours of
Thursday the freighter Mimosa
slashed into the oil tanker Burma
Agate, igniting raging fires on both
vessels. Many crewmen on the ships
were forced to jump over board and
many of those apparently never
made it to shore.
Four bodies were recovered
Thursday. On Friday and Saturday
two more were located, one which
has not been rempved from the
charred state room of the Mimosa
pending a medical examiner’s inves
tigation.
Coast Guard spokesman Richard
Griggs said the cutter Point Hope
pulled two bodies out of the water at
midday Sunday. A salvage crew
hired by the owners ofthe Burmah
Agate hoarded the burning ship
Sunday and discovered a body that
had previously been unaccounted
for.
Griggs said there is still was some
concern that the Burmah Agate
would reignite.
“At least three tugs are still hos
ing the tanker,” he said. “The pri
mary concern is keeping decks and
hull cool. There has been no effort
to put it out so far. As long as it’s
burning you don’t havea^^
reflash.
