Abilene Cooper polled all 17 firsts and a maximum 170 points to top Class AAAA, Paris drew 10 firsts and 161 points to lead Class AAA, and China Spring had 11 firsts and 158 points to remain atop the Class A ratings as voted by the Texas UPI board of sportswriters and sportcas- ters who regularly cover Texas schoolboy athletics. With the exception of Brecken ridge, which replaced fallen Kenedy atop the Class AA ratings, only minor changes appeared in the latest ratings as the top five teams — with the exception of Kenedy — remained the same. Conroe remained No. 2 in Class AAAA, La Porte retained third, San Antonio Converse Judson was fourth and Temple was fifth. All five teams have 7-0 records. Plano headed up the second five in Class AAAA with a sixth-place ranking, Houston Klein remained seventh, and Lubbock Monterey was eighth. Dallas White took over ninth place and Marshall moved in as 10th. They replaced Odessa Per mian and San Antonio MacArthur, both of whom were defeated last week. Huntsville, with three first-place votes, remained second in Class AAA, and Kerrville, with three firsts, retained third, with Beau mont Hebert fourth with one first and Gregory-Portland fifth. All five teams are unbeaten this year. Lubbock Estacado, with the other first-place vote, remained sixth and San Angelo Lakeview was seventh. However, the bottom three places all were new, with Jacksonville (8-0) taking over eighth, Brownwood (6-2) returning to the rankings in ninth place and San Antonio Madi son (7-1) claiming 10th. They re placed last week’s bottom three — Cuero, Pecos and Jasper — all los ers in last week’s games. Kenedy’s 18-8 upset by Yoakum knocked it all the way from the un beaten in Class AA and No. 1 rank ing, knocking it out of the top 10. Behind Breckenridge, with nine firsts, came Pittsburg with four firsts, Childress with two firsts. Hays Consolidated, Wylie with a first and Hallettsville with the other first. Abilene Wylie was ranked No. 7, Medina Valley No. 8, Van No. 9 and Fairfield No. 10. All of the top 10 teams this week are undefeated. Second-ranked Haskell, third- ranked Glen Rose and fourth- ranked Seagraves each polled one first-place ballot and fifth-ranked Troup received the other three first-place votes. Hawkins was rated sixth, Flatonia seventh, Rotan eighth, Dilley ninth and Pettus 10th. All 10 rated teams are unde feated, although Dilley has been tied, the only mark among the 10 teams. Pettus replaced Mason, which was beaten last week by Junc tion, 21-14. One creature that has controlled the fate and record team is the lowly Fourth-Quarter Phantom who has crawled outofliii dark cave of defeat in the fourth quarter of three A&M gamestlis season, turning victory into agonizing defeat. The ever-present Tyrant of Turnover and Fumble Freak be spent many a game with the Aggies, giving a helping hand to tie Fourth-Quarter Phantom, making life miserable for the A&Moffeose ad and head coach Tom Wilson. Speaking of Wilson and misery, a strange type of voodoo seems to be in practice around Aggieland. Wilson has felt the stingingpainsot the pressure pins the powerful Aggie alumni have been applyingwitk rumors of the witchdoctors buying up his contract and b another victim. The really powerful witchdoctors, although few in number ht many in bucks, always warn us not to bite the hand that feeds us yet it’s hard to take the diet they force down the University’s throalat times. Rice by T little m The Tex am wind; eekend in But the alumni is not to blame for all of the Aggies misery,con- , e Aggies trary' to popular belief. In fact, someone will probably end up cod necting the few alumni witchdoctors with the Spying Ghost of Kyle Field. And the poor alumni will catch unnecessary blame. By C Ba rsity of 1 tational. A&M wi But the Spying Ghost of Kyle has been a definite problem. Ikii Lrsday b classless, slinking, slimy slob, who was just discovered this week went to work before the Tyrant and the Freak even madeittokk- bock and Waco. It seems this creeping crawler sent informationabit A&M’s game plans to Texas Tech and Baylor before the them. Although the game plans didn’t affect the outcomes of the TecliaDil Baylor games, they certainly didn’t help the Ags. But one thing that did affect the outcome of the Tech gamera what is being called the phantom touchdown catch. The non-catct three-c riday. The Agg lator Invit as their be le season, y said. Competi niors Bit; was made by Tech s L.M. Cummings itr the fourth quarter. Game y juniors films show the ball bounced tiff Cummings, hit the groundand bounced back into Cummings s hands. And that’s where the Count of Crummy Breaks enters the scene In that particular play, the Count jumped in front of the referees that he wasn’t able to see the non-catch. And theres rumorsti* Count has taken his seat on the team’s bus more than once. Most say he put the ball in Houston receiver Eric Herringskd to set up the Cougars’ winning touchdown against the Ags. Um the sidelines and I thought I saw the Count right by EricM couldn’t tell because Igor the Interception Idiot was standing in tk way. Igor had already played a big part in the Coog-Ag game by pushiiS Houston’s Donnie Love in front of three Mike Mosley passes. But the season hasn’t been a total horror movie for the Ags. Ifyffl took away the Fumble Freak, Tyrant of Turnover, the Count ad Igor, the Ags would probably be 6-1. And if the Ags were 6-1 witchdoctors would have never shown up in the first place toll Wilson. I’m sure the rest of the Aggie schedule includes lots of tricks ad treats for the Aggie fans but hopefully, the monsters will go hoi after tonight. Or at least go to Houston or Arkansas orTexasor.
