Honest sells man vote for $5 United Press International LAKE CHARLES, La. — There is room for honesty, even in a scheme to steal an election. William Shaw, a former resident of Leesville, La., where more than 24 people already have been con victed of buying votes, said he switched his support in last year’s 4th Congressional District race after being promised $5 for voting for Rep. Claude “Buddy” Leach, D-La. Shaw testified Tuesday he planned to vote for Republican can didate Jimmy Wilson in the 1978 election, but decided to vote for Leach after being paid $5. “I figure if I didn’t, there might be a way for them to check and I wouldn’t get the money,” he said. “And if somebody paid me to vote, I was going to be honest and vote for the person they asked me to.” Leach, who won the election by 266 votes, is on trial for allegedly financing a scheme to pay 440 voters to vote for him.
