AMA to set ethical standards
Doctors to he allowed to advertise
United Press International
WASHINGTON — The Federal
Trade Commission Wednesday or
dered the American Medical As
sociation to allow the nation’s doc
tors to advertise — especially their
prices — but said the group may set
ethical standards for such ads.
The agency ruled that the AMA,
through its previous restrictions on
advertising, had severely inhibited
competition among doctors and
caused substantial economic harm
to consumers.

In ordering the group, which rep
resents more than half of all the na
tion’s physicians, to allow advertis
ing, the commission said: “It is
especially important that price ad
vertising remain as unfettered as
possible.”
At the same time, the commission
said it will allow the AMA to set
“reasonable, ethical guidelines” to
eliminate quackery in advertising
and to protect patients who because
of medical conditions may be par
ticularly vulnerable to certain kinds
of claims.
The FTC rejected the AMA’s
claim that it had already made ad
justments in its ethics; standards to
allow steps towards advertising. It
said the AMA had so far made only
“limited, ambiguous steps,” which
were not satisfactory.
The decision also affects the na
tion’s dentisits who have agreed to
be bound by whatever decision was^
reached in the AMA case. Some de
ntists are already advertising due to
a change made recently in the
American Dental Association rules.
The AMA represents 200,00
physicians and it membership in
cludes 72 percent of all office-based
practitioners.
The AMA had no immediate
comment in the case, which could
be appealed in court.
The case began nearly four years
ago when the FTC accused the
AMA of violating antitrust laws
through its ban on doctor advertis
ing. It said the arrangement illegally
fixed fees, which doctors charge for
their services.

Pigs not natives
of North America
United Press International
WASHINGTON — Pigs are not
native to the Western Hemisphere,
according to National Geographic
magazine.
The first pigs in the New World
reportedly were brought from
Europe by Christopher Columbus,
who left eight of them on the island
of Haiti. From that original stock,
the animals were transplated
throughout the West Indies.

BELFAST, Northern Ireland —
Pope John Paul II’s anti-violence
address during his Irish visit dealt a
severe blow to the outlawed Irish
Republican Army. Time will tell if it
was a fatal one.
That was the opinion of a large
number of priests, social workers
and ordinary folk who live in little
back-to-back houses.

the leader of the world’s 750 million
Roman Catholics seemed to end
with a communique from the IRA
refusing a ceasefire and threatening
a stepped-up campaign of violence.
But that is by no means a true
reflection of the situation. The
pope’s words shifted the sand be
neath IRA feet.
Before their communique was is
sued there was a hot struggle within
the IRA leadership, according to
IRA sources. Many argued that to
ignore the pope’s words would be a
disaster among the Roman Catholic
minority from which it draws a de
gree of support.
Others maintained that a cease
fire now would spell the end of the
movement. The “hawks” won at
least a temporary victory.
But the position on the ground
was very different. Priests at various
Catholic churches reported a huge
turnout at non-obligatory services
on weekdays.
“Many youngsters who had been
away from the sacraments for as long
as 10 years returned,” said one
priest.
The story was echoed by social

PREVENT
FIRE
Thanks
to you, I still
have a home.
For over 30 years, Smokey has been'
asking you to be careful with fire.
During that time, you’ve helped cut
the number of careless fires in half.
So from Smokey Bear and all of
us who live in the forest, thanks for
listening. And keep up the good work. (
