opened to the public after the first of
the year, he said.
He said that some of the over 700
aduates of the program have re-
Xhirned home to start their own
* hools. The program now offers an
structor training course as well, he
id.
In addition, Bramlett said that
due to a contract between the Saudi
rabian government and the Texas
n. ThecorlEngineering Extension Service, 44
bought ofs audi Arabian police officer candi-
'esidencj' ates are in their sixth week of train-
, almost! ig- They are being trained in all
me in thinlt? spects of law enforcement driving,
anotherps ,, The course, Bramlett said, con-
ists of eight basic maneuvers and a
out the aim nal exercise which encompasses all
il problems, he skills the driver has learned,
ship, notjuj ^ The first maneuver, he said, is the
Congress in (hacking turnaround. “It’s like a
anging pit; pant T. They come in on the stem,
leaver’s tb urn into the top, back all the way
across and come back out. It’s de-
;fast though igned to teach them how much
the ball;; P ace they-have to have to operate
^the car.”
Washingta The maximum braking maneuver
pany is next, Bramlett said. “We try to
Jbreak old habits that all of us have.
In a panic situation we all want to
iush the brake pedal as hard as we
an. People think the harder you
|an push the pedal, the faster you’ll
top, but that’s not true.”
Next comes the offset alley exer-
ise, he said. “The student has a
couple of gates he has to negotiate
rough. We do this both in forward
and reverse.”
“We’ve found in our research that
[bout 35 percent of all the accidents
hat a police fleet experiences are in
lonfined areas, in parking lots, in
driveways — tight spaces where
hey’re trying to get turned around,
hey get a lot of these little fender
benders and scrapes that aren’t real
major, but when you get a lot of
them they start to add up to quite a
lot of money, lost time and equip
ment, and a lot of paper work and
red tape,” he said.
Bramlett said the fourth maneu
ver the students are put through is
• the slalom.
“There’s a big weight transfer in
the car anytime there’s some hard
teering going on,” he said. “We call
it ‘chassis set’ and we want them to
now what effect that weight shift
las on the car. It can be very devas
tating in the fact that if you get all
The weight on one side of the car,
you compress the springs and the
hock absorbers, and when you take
that out the released energy wants
to go somewhere. A lot of times it
" has a violent reaction and throws the
car in the opposite direction.”
In the off-road recovery exercise,
I sa ^’ W® have a big gravel berm
(sill I that we run the cars off on. This is
designed to let the student see what
happens to the car when the coeffi
cient of friction changes drastically. ”
The accident simulator and
an always I hazard avoidance system constitute
the sixth maneuver, Bramlett said.
“It’s kind of like off-road recovery
in that we put them in a lane and
then we block that lane using a red
light. They must discern where the
jgreen light is and negotiate the car
under it. It’s a very quick-decision,
high-speed type of maneuver. It ties
in well with inter section-type of ac
cidents which are usually very
violent collisions,” he said.
Wet weather operations provide
skid training, he said.
“We have a 200 by 300 foot area
that has a low coefficient of friction.
We flood it with water, which allows
us to do a lot of skidding work. We
have some cars with special valves
in them which allow our instructors
to control which wheels get locked

up, thereby inducing certain types
of skids,” he said.
Next comes the handling oval, he
said.
“Our ultimate goal is to teach the
officer that just to put his foot to the
floor is not the answer to the prob
lem. We want him to develop a
good driving strategy. If he has a
good strategy and knows what the
car is capable of doing, then even if
someone is in a faster car than he is
he’s going to be in good shape. Very
seldom does a guy get on a straigh
taway and go as fast as he can. He
has to do a lot of cornering, hard
stopping and hard accelerating. So
we give him a cornering strategy in
the handling oval.”
The road track is the final maneu
ver, Bramlett said.
“We try to simulate as much as
we can a real-life driving situation.
We have a lot of straightaways,
hard, sharp corners and big sweep
ing corners. We let the student pool
everything we’ve taught him, all the
principles of vehicle control. ”
Bramlett said there has been only
one accident in the training pro
gram.
“We went for about four years
without having one, and then last
February we had an officer roll one
of our cars. In doing this type of
training,” he said, “we were very
fortunate that we hadn’t had one in a
long time. All our cars are equipped
with roll bars and special seat belts
and we make all our students wear
crash helmets. This officer last Feb
ruary lost control of one of our off
road cars on the off-road recovery
exercise and flipped it. He was in it,
we had an instructor in the front
seat with him and two officers in the
back. A couple of scratches is the
worst thing they came out with, and
at the same time the car was de
stroyed. ”
Bramlett said the training condi
tions are ideal.
“We want the officer to see what
he’s capable of doing. If he makes a
mistake out here and he loses con
trol of the car, ” he said, “the conse
quences are very small. He’s not
going to run over a school kid, he’s
not going to hit a pole or a parked
car because we don’t have those
things out here in the way. So it’s a
good chance for him to let go and
push things to the limit, and the big
thing is to find out what his limit is.
And then hopefully he’ll know when
he’s pushing his limit after that.”
