Hot water
re-appears
in dorms
By ANGELIQUE COPELAND
Battalion Reporter
The girls in the Keathley-
Fowler-Hughes dorm complex took
a lot of cold showers last week —
but not by choice.
The pump that circulated hot
water to the complex developed a
leak Oct. 10 that lead to a six-day
fast without hot water for the girls.
Girls in the dorm said they re
sorted to solutions ranging from
showering in friends’ dorms, to tak
ing two-minute showers, to just not
showering at all.
Debbie Dean, second floor resi
dent advisor for Fowler, said most of
the girls coped with the situation
well.
“I did have a lot of girls calling
and asking when the hot water
would be back on, but all I could do
was tell them to be patient. It wasn’t
that bad, though,’ Dean said. “We
survived, anyway.”
Signs along the doors of the dorm
rooms lamented the lost hot water
with sayings like “Heat the hell
outta cold water,” and “Where has
all the hot water gone; long time
passing.”
Gene Oates, resident hall safety
and maintenance supervisor, ex
plained why the girls were without
hot water for so long.
“A leak in one of the pipes leading
to the pump was discovered and re
paired by 2:30 that same afternoon.
But after the repair was made,
moisture was found condensed in
the electrical system and the pump
had to be removed and taken to
Brenham to be rewired.
“By 3:30 p.m. Friday the pump
was ready to be re-installed when
the repair crew found that the hous
ing on the pump was cracked. There
is no way of knowing if the housing
was already damaged or if it was
cracked in transit from Brenham,”
Oates said.
Oates said no comparable pump
could be found in Houston but they
finally found one in Dallas Tuesday.
A temporary patch on the old pump
had returned the hot water to the
dorms that afternoon.
Oates said that the old pump will
remain in place for now and when
the new pump is installed the hot
water should only be off a few hours.
Oates estimated the temperature
of the water the girls had to use dur
ing the time the hot water was off at
83 degrees.
Kim Payne, a junior who lives in
Fowler, said there is “no way” the
water was that warm. “The water
was freezing!” Payne said. “Who
ever told you that (it was 83 degrees)
should come over here and see if it
feels that warm to them.”
