By DINA KRUMNOW
Battalion Reporter
Wayne is big for his age. He is
more than six feet tall and weighs
about 185 pounds.
Without looking at his driver s
license, one cannot he sure of his
true age. During a recent visit in
College Station, Wayne’s age,
which is 16, could have gotten him
in trouble.
He and his friends went to a local
beer hall where he drank about 12
beers.
One of his friends said Wayne had
no trouble getting into the club.
“Wayne just waited until there were
a lot of people at the door and then
just walked right in.”
Wayne is not the only minor in
College Station that sneaks into
nightclubs or dancehalls. This is be
cause where college students go,
high school students want to go too,
said Jim Bundren of Texas Alcoholic
Beverage Commission (TABC).
The fact that minors sometimes
are able to purchase liquor could
mean trouble for both the minor and
the licensee who sold it, Bundren
said.
The minor, if caught, can he
punished. He or she can either be
turned over to the juvenile au
thorities or to parents, Bundren
said. If the person is 17, he could be
sent to jail.
The business holding the liquor
license where the minor purchased
the liquor stands a good chance of
having his license revoked or sus
pended, Bundren said.
It is the licensee’s responsibility
to keep minors out, Bundren said.
Some type of valid identification,
such as a driver’s license, should he
required to enter all local night
clubs. Many local clubs have a
doorman for this purpose.
Gary Seahack, owner of Studio
2818, said the only way minors can
enter his club is with a fake identifi
cation card.
At Spectrum, a new disco in
town, everyone who looks less than
31 is asked for identification, an em
ployee said. If a person looks under
21, sometimes he must produe]
kinds of identification.
The employee said if thereej
doubt about validity of the ii
cation, the patron is askedJ
his name, which is comparedtj
one on the driver’s license,
Another way the TABC an
sees avoid admitting imnors:|
using undercover men insiil
club club. If he sees somei®]
appears to be underage, ii
ployee is told to check hiside(|
tion again.
When the TABC receivesij
plaint from parents who thinij
child is purchasing liquoralij
ticular club, an officer iss
check the club. If the minorisj
purchasing liquor, heorsheii
prehended.
The local police are:
thorized to arrest any minorsa
drinking liquor without theiij
ents or guardian present,]
said.
The police make frequente|
the local clubs to check idd
tion. If the police visit
enough, the minors ares
away, Seahack said.
Through the aid ofthepokl
TABC and undercover me?I
problem with minors drinldnji
ally is decreasing, Bundrens
still exists. “It’s a game. Well
enforce the law, but you can^
everyone.”
