esearchers have found good, old-
’ashioned TLC may be one of the
aest treatments for preventing
itherosclerosis, the buildup of
holesterol in the body’s arteries.
The reseachers stumbled onto the
and as they were studying the ef
fects of certain diets in laboratory
rabbits.
Two groups of rabbits were fed
the same high-cholesterol diets, but
the group which was cuddled, indi
vidually fed and talked to, fared
much better.
At least 14 rabbits that received
TLC showed only half the evidences
aflesions, or injuries, in the aorta,
which are considered to be the
forerunner of heart disease.
^Actually, the reseachers didn’t set
out to study how TLC affected the
animals but were setting up a con
trol group for a different experiment
involving the impact of drugs on
high-cholesterol diets.
“We can say that TLC, in these
pilot studies, dramatically reduced
atherosclerosis,” said Fred Cornhill,
assistant professor of surgery in
OSU’s College of Medicine. “And
we’ve demonstrated it in three
cases. The results were so bizarre
we did it again and again.”
