'ae 6 THE BA1 TALIUN ** FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5, 1979 STuke quality control atisfies NCR official United Press International WASHINGTON — Construction andards at the South Texas Nu- ear Project are high despite al- ged death threats and assaults 'ainst conscientious quality control ispectors, a Nuclear Regulatory ommission official insisted Thurs- |py- But Karl Seyfrit, director of NRC egion IV in Arlington, Texas, said uprise NRC inspections of South exas Project work have been made nee charges of a breakdown in uality control began surfacing. The project, underway in a larsely settled area 30 miles from ay City, Texas, will have two , 100-megawatt Westinghouse reac tors to provide electricity for Austin, Houston and San Antonio. A former quality control super visor for Brown & Root, the firm building the project, said in a CBS television interview Thursday his inspectors were pressured to ap prove shoddy work. Dan Swayze said tensions be tween inspectors and construction foremen passed the point of harass ment and verbal abuse in July 1977 when a concerned inspector tried to halt a concrete pouring. He said his life was threatened and one inspec tor was assaulted and hospitalized. “All of the inspectors decided ob viously they wanted us to do exactly nothing but fill papers out,” he told Sun Theatres CBS. “We took a vote. We started filling paper out and we did it for five months.” Swayze said the inspectors then just played cards and signed what ever inspection certificates the con struction teams demanded. Seyfrit told UPI he was not alerted to the problem within Brown & Root until last March when a “phone call said one of the construction people had punched out one of the inspectors.” NRC inspectors found no evi dence company quality control lapsed for a five-month period and none of the nine Brown & Root em ployees they interviewed supported Swayze’s claims, he said. Seyfrit said construction quality is no worse than at the average nuclear site. 333 University o4t The only movie in town Double-Feature Every Week 10 a.m.-2 a.m. Sun.-Thurs. 10 a.m -3 a.rr*, PH.-Sat No one under 18 Ladies Discount With i his Coupon BOOK STORE & 25c PEEP SHOWS 846-980f 9 OUT OF 10 PUPPIES PREFER THE BATTALION ■t-VMSC AGGIE CINEMA?, •••••••••••••a, • ••••••••••• acJ • ••••••••••a • • _ what . jf mean*— Soon Voiii wifi fcttow* FRI. and SAT.
