Under clear autumn skies, the pope entered the church escorted by Cardinal John Krol and was greeted by a warm round of applause. He kneeled briefly at the altar, then spoke to the crowd. John Paul told the congregation that from childhood Neumann had said to God, “T want to be all yours in life. I want to be all yours in death.”’ “What really matters in life is that we are loved by Christ and that we love him in return,” the pope said. “In comparison to the love of Jesus, everything else is secondary, and without the love of Jesus everything else is useless. “May St. John Neumann pray for us and may we be strengthened in our love for Jesus Christ, Our Lord. ” The church erupted into applause and cheers but grew silent when the pope raised his arms and prayed in Latin. O’Hair took her case to the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Dis trict of Columbia, arguing the mass would violate the separation of church and state guaranteed by the Constitution. U.S. District Judge Oliver Gasch Wednesday dismissed her suit, which was aimed at blocking the Interior Department and the Na tional Park Service from permitting the mass on public land.
