LAWRENCE, Kan. — Amtrak’s
Southwest Limited jumped the
tracks as it sped eastbound through
the city for the first time Tuesday,
killing at least two persons and in
juring scores.
Sixteen of the 18 cars on the train
derailed.
Authorities at first reported four
fatalities but later said the bodies
had been counted twice.
The train was making its
eastbound run over the new route
for the first time since budget
slashing forced it to merge routes
with another train scheduled to be
dropped from the Amtrak system.
By late morning, 46 persons were
taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospi
tal, said Bob Campbell, a hospital
spokesman. Eight of those were
admitted, nine were released, and
29 were under observation.
The names of the two persons
killed were not released.
The wreck tore up track for about
2,000 feet and dumped several cars
down a slight ravine. At least seven
cars and the engine flipped over on
their sides. Many passengers were
forced to crawl through broken win
dows to safety.
Campbell said a few persons
aboard the train suffered burns from
a fire which broke out in the
car.
