LOS ANGELES — Gov. Ed
mund G. Brown Jr., returning from
a presidential campaign foray, said
Tuesday night he believes he has “a
good chance of winning” in Texas.
Brown said he felt his economic
stance would help him in Texas.
Brown replied to news reports
that Tom Quinn, his campaign man
ager, had told reporters in New
Hampshire Tuesday that in the
Democratic primary there, “first
place is conceded to Kennedy” and
the race will be “a battle for second
place” between Brown and Presi
dent Carter.”

OAKLAND, Calif.
Marijuana-growing charges against
state Court of Appeals Justice Paul
Halvonik could be erased if he
elects to participate in a “drug di
version” program — a course that
might allow him to keep his
$65,000-a-year post.
Halvonik and his attorney wife,
Deborah, are eligible for the court-
sponsored program, according to
the vice officer who led last Wed-
nesday s raid on the judge’s posh
hillside home.
If accepted into the program, the
defendants must informally admit
responsibility for the drug charges.
However, they need never go on
trial and the records of the arrest
will be expunged.
The Halvoniks were arrested last
Wednesday after a search of their
home uncovered 323 potted
marijuana plants, two “baggies” of
processed marijuana and $100 worth
of cocaine, police said.
