virtually ended the Houston Astros’
National League West pennant
hopes with a 9-4 victory.
The loss dropped the Astros 2Vi
games behind Cincinnati in the NL
West with only three games remain
ing.
In raising his record to 20-20,
Niekro became the first NL pitcher
since Irving Young of the Braves in
1905 to win and lose 20 games in a
season. Phil also joined Joe as the
only brother combination to both
win 20 games in the same season in
the NL. Joe was trying for his 21st
victory Wednesday night, which
would have been an Astros record,
but lasted only innings and was
charged with his 11th defeat.
Phil also had six strikeouts to raise
his career total to 2,396, tying him
with Sandy Koufax for 17th place on
the all-time list.
Phil, who knocked in four runs,
got the Braves off and running in the
second inning when he doubled in
two runs. He added a two-run single
in the sixth.
The Braves widened their lead to
4-0 and chased Joe Niekro in the
process in the third inning when
Gary Matthews singled home Jerry
Royster, who had led off with a dou
ble. Matthews later scored himself
on a single by Barry Bonnell. Bon-
nell singled home another run in the I
sixth and Phil Niekro then gave the |
Braves a 7-1 lead with a bases-
loaded single.
The Braves’ final two runs came
in the sixth on a two-run homer by
Matthews, his 27th.
The first run off Phil Niekro came
in the fifth and was unearned as Luis
Pujols got on on an error by first
baseman Dale Murphy and went to
third on another error by left fielder 1
Bonnell. The run scored on an in
field out.
The Astros added another run on
a pinch-homer by Dave Bergman in
the eighth and scored twice more in
the ninth.
