Coach Oscar Cripps readily ad mits he wants to continue the win ning ways begun by his team in 1977 but he also admits that the next two weeks are very important in the final outcome this year for fourth- ranked Stratford. “It’s our goal to begin this week to play for the state championship, and to do that means we want to win every game,” said Cripps. “But we also realize that we have a very young team this year. “And, what we learn against Port Neches this week and against La Porte next week is going to tell us a whole lot about ourselves,” he said. “Playing two great teams right off the bat can certainly help you when you get to district.” Stratford won its final four games in 1977 and 15 straight last year to run up a 19-game win streak. The four victories in 1977 came after a district loss, and that one defeat kept Stratford out of the playoffs until 1978. “I believe we have the quality of a team this year needed to win the state championship, and that’s what we re going to be out to do when we begin play Friday,” Cripps said. “I just hope our young players will be ready to go against the passing of Port Neches and the running of La Porte. If they can, I think well be ready for anything this year.” While Stratford is out to extend its winning ways, Abilene Cooper will be at Wichita Falls to prove last week’s 50-14 victory over Brownwood wasn’t a fluke. UCLA to upset Purdue? United Press International For the better part of the last dozen years Purdue University’s football team has been as big a tease as a row of burlesque strippers. With the exception of last season, when the Boilermakers posted a 9-2-1 record, Purdue has had a reputation of not fulfilling its poten tial, despite perennially fielding a plethora of talent that has included the likes of Leroy Keyes, Mike Phipps, Bob Griese and Otis Armstrong. Purdue started to shed its image last season when Coach Jim Young guided the Boilermakers to a Peach Bowl berth (and a subsequent victory over Georgia Tech) and this year there is talk of the team’s mak ing it to the Rose Bowl as the Big Ten Conference champions. The Boilermakers began im pressively last Saturday when they crushed Wisconsin, 41-20, behind quarterback Mark Herrmann’s four touchdown passes. UCLA is Purdue’s opponent Saturday night at Los Angeles and we think rabid Purdue fans may need a few boilermakers when the final result comes in. We re picking this one as our UPSET SPECIAL with the Bruins containing Herrmann enough to pull out a 20-16 victory. If your study technique is typical, you spend 26 hours each week buried in your books. 66-2/3% of this study time is wasted on an antiquated set of procedures. Procedures that have remained unchanged for over a hundred years. What’s worse, Vou presume there is nothing you can do to improve. The prevailing attitude on campus is “\bu either have it or you don’t!” What nonsense! Evelyn Wood course. The answers were varied, but mostly on the same wave length: 1) They wanted to reduce their study time; 2) They wanted to feel more confident in class, more in control; and 3) They wanted to learn more, to achieve better grades. At the end of the course, each student was asked if his goals were met. Over 95% said yes. The other 5% received their tuition back Any student with average intelligence can im prove his reading and study skills at least 3 times with a) better techniques, b) expert coach ing, and c) controlled practice. And he can do it quickly —in time to dramatically increase his grades in the current semester For this is precisely what the Evelyn Wood course offers, and backs it up with an iron-clad, no-nonsense, written guarantee. Why Do Most Students Read Slowly? THE GUARANTEE Any student who attends every Evelyn Wood class, completes the required practice, yet does not improve reading and study skills at least 3 times will be eligible to receive a full tuition refund. Over 1 9 000,000 Graduates Over 95% SUCCESS! Since 1959, three Presidents have invited Evelyn Wood instructors to teach their staffs how to read better. All in all, the list of famous graduates reads like Who’s Who: Most students have no idea what their reading ability is. If they are typical, they read about 300 words per minute (or one page of a novel). Why is it that students read at virtually the same speed, considering how very different they all are? The cause can be traced back to the First Grade. When we were taught to read, we were asked to read out loud, word-by-word. Later, in the Second Grade, we were asked to stop saying each word out loud. But we never really did. Fact is, you’re saying these words right now—not out loud, but to yourself, one word at a time! This means you read only as fast as you talk— about 250 to 300 words per minute. (As if to prove the point, Guiness’s Book of World Records lists John F. Kennedy as delivering the fastest speech ever at 327 words per minute). old-fashioned speed reading technique of picking out key phrases. In the Evelyn Wood course, skimming is a dirty word! The PRICE BOILS DOWN TO $2 AN HOUR. Read what the University of Illinois student paper said (Ed Sejud): “If a student avails himself of all the facilities by the (Evelyn Wood) Institute and attends all the class sessions, the price boils down to only about $2 an hour, cheaper than any private tutoring you’ll ever find. Spread over four years, the course can save thousands of study hours and can probably affect a boost i n a student’s grade-point average. Assignments which once took days can be accomplished in a matter of hours, leaving much more time for other pursuits. The Institute estimates that it can save average students 350 hours of study time each semester— probably an understatement”. With The Same Comprehension? At the Mini-Lesson you will find out how the Evelyn Wood course eliminates the habit of read ing only one word at a time. Just a little, but enough to know what it’s like. At the Mini-Lesson you will find out how the Evelyn Wood technique handles difficult text book material. How it improves memory and concentration. How it makes reading a pleasure instead of a chore. Let’s face it, if the Evelyn Wood course is for real, you ought to know about it.
