LAS VEGAS, Nev. — CBS Evening News anchorman Walter
Cronkite says both the Republican and Democratic parties have
urged him to seek public office, but that he resents their attempts to
capitalize on his name.
“I’ve had offers from both parties to run for offices ranging from dog
catcher to president, ” Cronkite said during the weekend at the 34th
annual Radio and Television News Directors Association convention.
SAN FRANCISCO — The Coast Guard searched the Pacific 400
miles west-southwest of San Francisco Monday for a Greek freighter
carrying a crew of 25 which radioed an SOS three times, but then
made a routine message check two hours later.
The Coast Guard said it would continue a search for the vessel until
visual contact was established with the ship, whose crewmen are
Greek, Fillipino and Indonesian.
NEW YORK — A man who apparently believed the deacon of a
Brooklyn church had seduced his former wife decapitated the deacon
with an ax Sunday in full view of horrified parishoners, police say.
Police said Deacon Robert Williams was killed while en route to
Sunday school services at the Light House Church of Love and
Peace.
