Dr. Douglas Von Gonten, head of the department, said that the min ing engineering program, which began this fall, comes at a time when Texas is looking to its vast de posits of lignite and uranium to help meet energy demands. “We have an emerging mining industry within the state and we have no school turning out mining engineers,” he said. Texas A&M is the only university in the state to offer a degree in the field. The program will provide stu dents with training in surface and underground mining, Von Gonten said. Major emphasis will be placed on surface mining, however, because Von Gonten said he feels that the majority of the students will be going into this type of operation. He said that graduates with the new de- ocal music adds director, pianist in one \mcv S. Theeman of College 'ark. Dr. James Russell, one of the two mining engineering professors, said that the demand for graduates with a degree in mining engineering will increase as oil and gas reserves are depleted. He said lignite and uranium will be developed as sources of power. There are currently 20 students involved in the program, and Von Gonten, who is the program admin istrator, estimated that within four years about 100 students will be seeking degrees in this area. He said the program, which the petroleum engineering department began planning four years ago, has already cost approximately $20,000, and added that within the next five years, about $100,000 worth of equipment will be purchased.
