Monday, September 3 The Battalion CAMPUS c lome sweet home Library addition offers Aggies less noise, more room By RHONDA WATTERS Battalion Staff First, the bad news. If you are one of those students i, for reasons of academic survi- al, has spent a good part of your career trying to learn where venthingis located in the Sterling Evans Library, prepare yourself a blow. The new library addition ready for use, and many of its ilities are in new places. But now take heart, because here omesthe good news. Even though it will take some getting used to, the new library complex is well worth taking the effort. Not only is there almost twice as much room as be fore, but there are also many new improvements. Deborah Brown, Special Projects Librarian, said although the change has not quite been completed, the new library complex is totally functional and is a big improvement over the previous facility. Brown said that the biggest asset of the complex is the increase in size. With a gross area of 469,650 square feet, it has a seating capacity of 4,470, and will hold two million volumes and two million microform pieces. The old facility could hold only one million volumes. The number of study carrels throughout the library has also been increased. Now there are a total of 385, almost twice as many as before. Many departments, such as cur rent periodicals and special collec tions, also have new locations and larger areas than before Brown said that one important improvement in the facility is the installation of a new security sys tem. The old method of having a doorman check for books at the exit has been replaced by an electronic gate and tumstyle system. In each book there is a small magnetic strip which is removed when the book is checked out. If a person tries to go through the turnstyle carrying a book that has not been checked out, an electronic verifier will lock the turnstyle and set off a small alarm. A library em ployee will then come out to check the problem. Brown said the electronic system will be much faster than the old sys tem and will prevent a “pile-up” of students at the one library exit in between classes. Another area where im provements have been made in the library is in noise reduction. Carpet has been installed on the floors and walls, and study areas have been set back in small alcoves where traffic will not be heavy and the stacks ab sorb much of the noise. Copy machines, a source of an noying noise to people trying to study, have been placed in small semi-enclosed rooms away from the study areas to combat noise. Another improvement is the addi tion of a new department called the Multi-Media Department. This de partment contains audio and visual materials such as cassettes and slide films. Materials for the facility will be purchased on faculty recom mendations and will be in support of the curricula on campus. The first floor of the library has a centralized references division where the most frequently used ref erences are kept. This area contains a reference desk where people can obtain handouts showing where li brary materials are located. Direct phone lines to the reference desk are located on floors three through six so people needing help or infor mation can get it without having to go to the first floor. The hours of the new complex are Monday-Thursday 7:30 midnight, Friday 7:30 a.m.-11:00 p.m., Satur day 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m.-midnight. The library has only one entrance and exit. It is located on the east side of the buildings. The official dedication for the complex will be held Nov. 17, prior Battalion photo by Robert Cook The Oceanography and Meteorology building reflects off the mirrored windows of the new library additon. The new addi tion is open and r^ady for use by students. Formal dedication of the addition is schedules for Nov. 17 before the Texas A&M-Arkansas football game. to the Texas A&M-Arkansas football game. Anyone interested can sign up for tours of the library. She said the li brary also encourages professors to have library instructional people speak to their classes about the new facilities.
