‘Gas jockey’ plan fails in Houston

HOUSTON — A few weeks ago
the lines at gasoline stations were
long and growing longer and Sue
Thompson’s plan for The Gas Joc
keys seemed like a good idea.
Thompson’s Gas Jockeys were of
fering to do your waiting in gas lines
for busy motorists. Now that gas
lines have disappeared because of
increased refining, odd-even ration
ing and re-adjustments in the fed
eral allocation program, the firm is
out of business.
“I thought the gas lines would last
longer than they did,” said Thomp
son, a personnel counselor looking
for some side income. “They were
so great for a time, you know, blocks
long. ”
The idea was this: tor $10 and the
price of the gas. The Gas Jockeys
would take your car to a service sta
tion and sit in line waiting for gas in
your place.
Thompson put an ad in the paper
for drivers. She thought it was an
opportunity for housewives, part-
time workers, students, anyone
looking for additional income. Then
she advertised for customers.
She recruited 98 jockeys and 50
customers.
“And those we got were so few
and far between — they were scat
tered all over the city,” she said.
By the end of July, less than a
month after the company started.
Miss Thompson said the company
had spent $4,000 more than it had
taken in, mostly on advertising.
She said similar companies in
other parts of the country have suc
ceeded despite ups and downs in
gasoline shortages.
“If we’d been able to keep
jockeys busy in their own areas,
might have made it,” Thom
said. “But it just wouldn't have
profitable for them to be dm
