The nation’s civil defense com
munications network will be used to
alert state and municipal authorities
if it appears debris from Skylab
might fall in the United States
within the next couple of weeks.
The National Aeronautics and
Space Administration plans to oper
ate a special Skylab coordination
center around the clock, starting 24
hours before the abandoned space
station is expected to drop out of or
bit.
North American Air Defense Com
mand is that Skylab will re-enter the
atmosphere within a six-day period
centered around Thursday, July 12.
About 500 pieces are likely to sur
vive, landing in a 400,000 square
mile area anywhere between 50 de
grees north latitude and 50 degrees
south latitude.
A nationwide UPI survey found
that some local civil defense com
mand centers also will be activated
in the final hours before Skylab’s
fall.
Because the chance is slight the
space junk will fall in any specific
state, and even more remote it will
cause any injury or damage, prepa
rations have been limited largely to
establishing communications be
tween federal Skylab watchers and
local authorities.

The Defense Department’s civil
defense warning system, which
links 2,300 local dispatch centers,
will be used as an alerting and re
porting network.
The NASA coordination center, a
windowless room in the agency’s
headquarters building in Washing
ton, will be manned during the final
24 hours of Skylab’s orbital life by
representatives of the White House,
State Department, Federal Pre
paredness Agency, Federal Aviation
Administration and Defense De

PRINCETON, N.J. — The over
whelming choice of Democrats sur
veyed about the party’s presidential
nomination in 1980 is Sen. Edward
Kennedy of Massachusetts, the
latest Gallup Poll shows.
The survey asked Democratic
voters to choose among nine candi
dates. Fifty-two percent of those
polled gave Kennedy their vote, 23
percent picked President Carter
and 7 percent went for California
Gov. Jerry Brown.
But the poll, completed last
Monday, also showed Brown gave
Carter a “suprisingly” strong show
ing when Kennedy’s name is
excluded from the ballot.
When the Massachusetts Demo
crat’s name was kept off the ballot,
23 percent of the voters chose Car
ter, just 2 points ahead of Brown
who pulled 21 percent and Sen.
George McGovern of South Dakota
and Vice President Walter Mondale
with 11 percent each.
The other potential nominees
listed were senators Frank Church
of Idaho, Henry Jackson of Wash
ington, Daniel P. Moynihan of New
York and Morris Udall of Arizona.
“Only twice before in the 47-year
history of the Gallup Poll has a po
tential presidential nominee led an
incumbent president in these tests
of nomination strength — and never
to the extent Kennedy leads Car
ter,” George Gallup said.
