NEW YORK — Tom Cousineau,
a hard-hitting linebacker from
Ohio State called by his former
coach. Woody Hayes, “the best
conditioned athlete I’ve ever
coached,” was selected by the Buf
falo Bills to open the 1979 National
Football League draft.
Cousineau is only the second
linebacker to be made the first
pick in the draft since it was insti
tuted in 1936. Atlanta took Tommy
Nobis of Texas as the top choice in
1966
Cousineau, a 6-foot-3, 227-
pound native of Fairview Park,
Ohio, is a two-time All-America
who led the Buckeyes in tackles
last season with 227, 125 of them
unassisted. He was named the
Most Valuable Defensive Player in
the 1977 Orange Bowl game
against Colorado and the Defen
sive Player of the Came in the
1979 Hula Bowl. ,
