Millionaire’s legacy opened United Press International SAN FRANCISCO — It rained and rained for the opening of Dr. Henry D. Cogswell’s 100-year-old time capsule, and he would have thought the weather fitting. The late eccentric millionaire was an ardent foe of alcohol. The opening of the time capsule — a lead box — coincided with the re dedication of a statue of Benjamin Franklin in Washington Square in North Beach. The box was found in the statue recently when it was taken down for renovation. Many joked that the capsule would contain a bottle of whiskey. It didn’t. Now you know United Press International HASLETT, Mich. — More roses are given on Mother’s Day than any other time of the year — more than 50 million, or about one-tenth of a year’s production by the nation’s commercial rose growers. The Commercial Rose Growers Associa tion says roses are America’s year- round favorite flower by a ratio of 3-to-l, and red roses are the over whelmingly favorite color. Cogswell, who died in 1900 at the age of 80 after founding a technical college, erected the statue on Kear ney Street as his symbol for temper ance. The statue was later moved to North Beach — a district where taverns abound. Hanging from a tree was a pennant reading: “Have Courage Boy, to say No” and “Dare to be for Temper ance.” After Mayor Dianne Feinstein removed the drape from the statue, the box was removed and city plumber Lloyd Pool struggled for five minutes, using the tools of his trade, to unlock the Cogswell legacy. At one point, Feinstein pulled out a small vase. The box also contained old copies of Harpers, newspapers, a calendar, a woman’s fashion book, an illus trated almanac, a book of poems, a string of buttons, a plumber’s badge, a piece of silver and copies of city laws. And there was a set of bylaws for the Ladies Christian Union. The city placed its own time cap sule in the renovated statute, but Cogswell would have objected to one item — a bottle of cabernet sauvig- non. AGGIES!
