Women s tennis
Texas A&M’s women’s tennis

weetTbut should be ready for the
tourney.
The state championship is the
stepping stone onto the regional and
national championships.

Spurs take two-game lead
United Press International
SAN ANTONIO — A free throw
by Alan Bristow with four seconds
remaining clinched a thrilling 121-
120 San Antonio victory over
Philadelphia Tuesday night, giving
the Spurs a 2-0 lead in their best-
of-seven Eastern Conference semi
final series.
San Antonio let a 12-point lead
slip away in the third quarter and
then lost a 10-point lead in the final
period, but a single free throw by
Mike Gale and the final charity toss
by Bristow sealed the win before the
largest crowd ever to see a profes
sional game in Texas — 16,709.
Philadelphia lost a chance to tie
the game when, with six seconds
remaining and the 76ers trailing by
two, Maurice Cheeks misfired on a
pass to Henry Bibby.
The ball sailed out of bounds and
after San Antonio inbounded the
ball, Bristow brought it up court and
was fouled. Bristow missed his first
foul opportunity, but tossed in the
[second one to clinch the game.
Cheeks made a layup as time ran out
to account for the final score.
Cheeks had scored 12 points in
the first period as the 76ers jumped
to a 33-28 lead at the end of a quar
ter. San Antonio fell six points be
hind in the second quarter, but ral
lied behind nine points from James
Silas and eight from backup center
Mike Green to capture a 63-56
halftime lead.
Philadelphia did not lead again,
but knotted the score at 110-110
with 2:28 left: on a dunk shot by Dar
ryl Dawkins, who led the 76ers with
27 points — 22 of them in the sec
ond half.
George Gervin, the NBA s lead
ing scorer, hit 29 points for San An
tonio while Larry Kenon had 27 and
Silas 25. Julius Erving, who had cut
the deficit to 119-118 before Gale
made one of of two free shots with
12 seconds left, scored 25 points.
Cheeks wound up with 22 and
Bobby Jones had 20.
Silas scored 14 of his points in the
third quarter to help the Spurs open
as much as a 12 point advantage, but
he did not score a point in the fourth
period.
After Philadelphia tied the game
at 110-110, Kenon hit two free
throws to put San Antonio in front
for good. Moments later Gervin he
made a free throw and the lead see
sawed between one and three points
the rest of the game.
Among the critical baskets during
the final two minutes was a jump
shot by Bristow with 49 seconds re
maining to make the score 117-114.
Bristow finished with six points.
The series goes to Philadelphia
for games on Friday night and Sun
day afternoon and, if necessary, the
semifinal playoffs will come back to
the HemisFair Arena Thursday,
April 26.
