UT get OK

in med school
United Press International
HOUSTON — The University of
Texas medical school has received
approval to increase its fall freshman
enrollment to 200 students, 50 more
than the current first-year group.
Dean Robert L. Tuttle said 2,300
persons applied for the 150 positions
in the current class. The Houston
school is one of four operated by the
UT System.
The San Antonio Symphony gave three concerts Wednesday
morning to about 7,500 school children from as far away as
Brenham. Here, Donald O’Shall and Brad Hobson enjoy the
9 a.m. performance. Both O’Shall and Hobson are second
graders at Bonham Elementary School in Bryan.

Aggieland is accustomed to hear
ing mainly country and western
music. Tuesday night a very differ
ent sound came to Rudder Tower in
the form of the San Antonio Sym
phony.
Watching a symphony perform is
like seeing a delicate, complex
engine run. Each piece moves per
fectly, at the exact moment and in
complete harmony with all the other
gears.
This was the impression the San
Antonio Symphony gave in its per
formance of Beethoven’s “Sym
phony Number 3 in E Flat Major,
Op. 55,” (“Eroica”).
It was very precise and profes
sional, but a bit too much like a
machine. Though the musicians
Review
were obviously excellent, they did
not play with the depth or fervor
which Beethoven deserves.
This flaw, however, was not the
fault of the conductor, Roger
Melone. Melone is a highly
acclaimed artist known for his direc
tion of opera, symphony and ballet.
Melone put a tremendous amount
of energy and enthusiasm into his
conducting. Unfortunately, the
musicians did not respond to it in

Following intermission the sym
phony was joined by Texas A&M’s
Singing Cadets and Century Sin
gers. And the symphony finally
came to life.
The Cadets performed as back
ground to Brahm s “Rhapsody for
Contralto,” sung by Jeanmarie Dot-
son. The Century Singers presented
the four part ‘‘Wedding Cantata” by
Pinkham.
The choirs were very good as they
always are.
The symphony merrtbers, who
joined in applause, seemed as
pleased and impressed by the choirs
as the audience.
For the finale, the Singing Cadets
and the Century Singers crowded
together on the stage behind the
symphony to perform “Polovetsian
Dances” from Borodin’s “Prince
Igor.”
This was by far the high point of
the performance. The music was
fast, intense, complex, and included
big drums and a tambourine.
The force of the lyrics (which
were almost chanted at points) and
the music created the atmosphere of
the Russian folk camp celebration
Borodin’s opera describes.
