Aggies leave Red Raiders in the dark
By KURT ABRAHAM
Battalion Reporter
With a show of power almost as
impressive as the windstorm that
forced them indoors, the Texas
A&M tennis team torpedoed floun
dering Texas Tech 8-1, while snap
ping a three-game losing streak in
Southwest Conference action at
Lubbock Monday.
It was the second time in two days
that the Aggies were faced with the
prospect of trying to play in a
windstorm and considering their 6-3
loss to TCU Sunday, things did not
look very hopeful for the Ags.
Given a chance to play indoors,
Texas A&M coach David Kent
gladly opted for a little darkness
rather than try to brave the blinding
dust being kicked up outside.
“It might have been a little hard
for some of our players to see well
inside, but it sure beat the condi
tions we had outside,” said Kent.
It turned out to be a fortunate
move for the Ags, as they posted
their best conference performance
since the 8-1 win over Baylor last
month. After losing 16 of the last 18
singles matches, A&M broke loose
to take five of six from the hapless
Red Raiders.
“I thought Mike Moss looked par
ticularly sharp in the No. 3 seeded
match,” said Kent. “He’s been hot
lately and seems to be getting better
with every match. I also thought
Hendrick Roller did a good job
against Tech. He was in a slump for
quite a while, but now he’s looking
more like the player I know he can
be.”
While Moss and Roller were
boosting their overall records to
11-8 and 12-7, Reid Freeman was
struggling through his eighth loss in
the last nine matches. The match
was the only blemish on the Aggies’
performance Monday, as Freeman
failed to last into three sets, losing to
Doug Davis, 7-6, 6-3.
“Reid’s problem against Tech was
that he just had a real hard time se
eing on the indoor courts,” said
Kent. “His game has been off lately,
but I think he’ll eventually come
around.”
Freeman had far less trouble
playing in the No. 1 doubles match,
as he and teammate Alberto
Jimenez held off Raiders Davis and
Harrison Bowes to win, 6-3, 7-6.
Meanwhile, in the No. 2 seeded
match. Moss and Trey Schutz were
chalking up their fifth win in six con
ference matches by beating Chow
Wgh and Randy Clayton, 6-3, 6-3.
The win also gave Moss and
Schutz an overall record of 14-5,
good enough to give them a winning
percentage of .737.
“I can’t say enough about how
hard those two have played, espe
cially against the tough competition
we’ve faced all year,” Kent said.
“Half of the teams we play are in the
top 20.”
The Aggies made it a sweep of the
doubles when Roller and fim
Grubert won the third match, 6-4,
7-6 over Robert Davis and Greg
Davis. It was the eigth time in 19
dual matches this season that Texas
A&M has swept the doubles action.
Kent said he felt his team’s good
showing was the result of a good
team effort.
“I don’t care how good your
players are, if they don’t think like a
team, and help out each other, it’s
going to hurt you sooner or later,”
he said. “We’ve played several
teams this year that did fine in the
singles but then got beat in the dou
bles because their egos caused them
