Parachutists try to hit the spot

How’s this for accuracy: a 2,500-
foot drop from an airplane onto an
orange disk that’s only 10 centimet
ers in diamemter? Even if this
skydiving sport is a little too
dangerous for you, you might enjoy
watching the Texas A&M University
Sport Parachute Club’s accuracy

pected. Trophies will be awarded
for the first five places in each divi
sion and a team trophy will also be
awarded.
“This is an officially recognized
collegiate meet, but the number of
participants we have will depend on
whether people will travel that far,”
McDaniel said. “We’ll just have to
wait and see.”
“In accuracy jumping, the goal is
for the jumper to predict his exit
point from the plane so that he lands
in a pea^gravel pit as close as he can
to the target — an orange disk 10
centimeters in diameter,’’
McDaniel said.
“Each jumper gets three jumps
apiece, and the person with the
smallest cumulative total of inches
away from the disk wins.”
McDaniel said there are about
120 members in the Parachute Club
and to be eligible to jump in meets,
they must have gone through Texas
A&M’s training program. He also
said that parachutists receive
licenses from the United States
Parachute Asution according to the
number of jumps they complete.
In accuracy competition, jumpers
leave the plane and immediately
pull the cord that opens their
parachute. But in free-fall jumping,
parachutists wait longer until they
open their parachute.
“I think that a couple of other
guys and I hold the record for a
jump,” McDaniel said. “We jumped
from 14,500 feet, with an 85 — sec
ond free-fall.”
McDaniel said that competition
will start at daylight Saturday and
will probably continue till dark.
The Hearne airport is located east
of Hearne on Highway 485.
