THE BATT DOES IT DAILY Monday through Friday BY LORI SHULER Battalion Reporter ■ Freshmen at Texas A&M Univer sity’s summer orientation will be ole to ask students questions about lie University, providing there are ^nough volunteers to answer them. For the second summer. Student Services will sponsor a peer adviser program. Kay Evans, assistant to Student Jevelopment Coordinator Glenna Pitt, is coordinating the program lis year. Advisers are needed, she ays. Deadline to apply to be an adviser is April 26. “We are looking for individuals vith enthusiasm about the Univer sity and about themselves who are villing to share that enthusiasm vith new students to help them overcome the transition from the aigh school environment,” Evans id. Peer advisers must work on a vol- [inteer basis. Evans said although se advisers can’t be paid, they can have “an opportunity to help incom ing students in a kind of way we vould have liked to have been jielped.” Evans said last year there were fibout 30 peer advisers and this year bey would like to train 40 to 50 stu- dents for the 13 orientation sessions. Each advisor will be required to at tend a minimum of two of the two- pour sessions. During each session _pach adviser will meet with about 10 new students. To qualify, a student must have been a student at Texas A&M dur- ng the 1978-79 school year, have a 2.25 overall GPR, be active in at east one student organization and Attend one of two training sessions. ■ The training sessions will be June 3 and July 12. Each will last six ^pours. These sessions will prepare Idvisers to answer student ques tions, review discussion topics and give ideas on sharing the Aggie spirit, Evans said. Applications are available in the Off-Campus Center, in the Puryear Hall lounge. Student Service staff members will choose the advisers. Evans said there is a possibility of having inter views. Evans said a student does not have to be attending summer school to be an adviser. She also said being an adviser would not require a lot of time. Besides the six-hour training session, there are only two other time requirements. One is meeting with new students for the two-hour sessions on Mondays and Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. The other is checking in at the Off-Campus Center once each week. Evans said peer advisers are a source of information for new stu dents and the sessions are designed to give students an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the University in an informal way. “These peer advisers will find themselves in a position of leader ship comparable to that of a resident adviser in a dorm,” Evans said. “Their job will be to give hope and encouragement and express an at titude of friendliness.” ALLEN Oldsmobile Cadillac Honda SALES - SERVICE “Where satisfaction is standard equipment” 2401 Texas Ave. 779-3516 IS LOCATION IMPORTANT?
