Page 16 THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, APRIL 4, 1979 Governor’s disclosure demand met Fairbanks comes to CU in $300,000 deal United Press International DENVER — The University of Colorado Tuesday announced de tails of a $300,000 agreement that will bring Chuck Fairbanks to CU from his head coaching job with the New England Patriots of the NFL. A CU spokesman said the school would pay the Patriots $200,000 — in two equal installments due April 25 and June 15 — and Fairbanks would waive claim to $105,000 in compensation from New England. The disclosure apparently was in response to a heated demand by Gov. Richard D. Lamm, issued ear lier in the day, that CU dispel the secrecy surrounding the negotia tions involving Fairbanks. Lamm complained that CU and the Pat riots had treated the public “like mushrooms — kept in the dark and a bunch of manure spread on us. ” “This is public business,” Lamm said. “It should be conducted in the sunlight.” CU President Roland Rautenstraus said the payments to the Patriots would be made by the Flatirons Club Fund, consisting of gift monies restricted for athletic department purposes. No tax dollars would be involved. “These ftinds are not funds avail able for any other use within the university,” he said. Rautenstraus said the settlement, ending four months of legal bicker ing and recrimination, also stipu lated that the Patriots consent to the dissolution of an injunction prevent ing CU from attempting to hire Fairbanks. Fairbanks will receive a $45,000 salary at Colorado plus extras which will boost his annual income to $200,000. There had been reports that CU would pay the Patriots $500,000 to obtain Fairbanks’ release. But CU Rosenbloom’s funeral today United Press International HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — A “sim ple and dignified” funeral service for Los Angeles Rams’ owner Carroll Rosenbloom, 72, will be held today for close friends and family. Cremation will follow. A public memorial service will be held in the Los Angeles area Monday. Rabbi Irvin Lehrman of Miami Beach’s conservative Temple Emanuel will officiate at the funeral rites. Although only a casual ac quaintance of Rosenbloom, Lehrman said he had “known of him and followed his career.” He said he would stress in his eulogy Rosenbloom’s “love for people, regardless of who they were in terms of religion or race. “He didn’t believe in walls be tween people. He was a bridge builder. He loved people, he was interested in people. This is a tre mendous trait. This is the essence of religion. The origin of the word God is the word good. Rosenbloom drowned Monday in front of his rented mansion in the Miami Beach suburb of Golden Beach despite valiant efforts to save him. DOUGLAS PG Fw~furr% J Athletic Director Eddie Crowder, a former football coach at the Big Eight Conference school, termed that figure “ridiculous.” “That statement out of Boston that $500,000 is involved is highly inaccurate,” Crowder said from his Boulder office. “There was some compensation and an exchange of considerations. The final details are a kind of legal matter. The bits I know about I’m not free at this point to reveal. Sources had said part or all of the money might come from Denver oilman Jack Vickers, former owner of the Colorado Rockies National Hockey League team. Vickers is president of the Flatirons Club which will make the payments to the Patriots. Lamm said he was not personally involved in the Fairbanks situation since the university first hired the football coach, but now would de mand that the arrangements be made public. He admitted he had no authority or jurisdiction to-force public disclosure, but said he hoped the weight of his office and public demands would require the univer sity and its board of regents to re veal what had gone on in the Fair banks’ situation. “I think that Mr. Fairbanks, with the talents that he has, would not want to come in under any cloud of suspicion or any secret deals,” Lamm said. “I’m sure that he is wel comed here and will be welcomed by a lot of our citizens, but you don’t come in with a cloud of suspicion and secrecy hanging over your head.” Lamm said anything connected with a public institution has to be public business, even if the funds involved come from a private source. He said he believed the in cident had reflected poorly on the university, the state’s largest school. “I believe that CU would be well advised, given their situation here in the state, to comply,” the gover nor added. The governor said although he was upset with the way Crowder had handled the problem, he would not demand his resignation. “Everything in this government, in my years (in office), has been conducted in the sunlight and I ex pect CU to release that informa tion,” Lamm said. “It is not private information. It is public information and it belongs to the people. “I think probably the deal is you get some wealthy sports person, who probably owned a hockey team less, to come up with i money. But the fact is | lie institution, it is und e J' dibility problems in the l if not in the public, andi] the way to ease the p^u they have up there.” Lamm was referring to I that the university has eji] severe financial problems jA 1 larly in operating its Medy f in Denver, and has asked!* I for additional fundstopijl shutdown of some hospjj I i.injff.jM.OTmmip.
