Because of my past work with Stu dent Government and with other or ganizations such as the Corps, Stu dent Y, Arts Committee, recon, OCF and newcomers. What do you see as the major problems and issues confronting the VP for Student Services next year? The major problems and issues confronting the Vice President for Student Services next year are: As usual, sport ticket allocations, park ing, the bike problem, the bus sys tem, and other problem that the stu dents would bring to Student Gov ernment. I would like to get more people involved in Student Gov ernment, for it and for all students. What changes, if any, do you plan to make as VP for Student Services? I would look at all the problems that arise and ask the students for their opinions and then would try to act on what would be best for the whole Student body. Why should students pick you over any of the other candidates? I feel that all the candidates would do a good job. My past experience in Student Government and other leadership positions and activities show that I would do a good job. I am interested in all students at Texas A&M and would do my best to help them get what is needed. What do you as a student owe to the student body as an elected offi cial, and what does it owe to you? Sometimes it’s obvious what we need on this campus. The parking situation is terrible, basketball ticket lines stretch for miles, and we lack information on many campus events. Working with several projects for two years has made me aware of these and less obvious needs and has shown me some ideas to help solve them. What do you see as the major problems and issues confronting the VP for Student Services next year? The main problem next year is to turn the committee around and make it provide some new programs that benefit students directly. Some ideas are publishing an informational magazine, a car care center, a food co-op, easier ticket distribution, bet ter internal shuttle bus routes as well as several other new suggestions. What changes, if any, do you plan to make as VP for Student Services? The first change is to start a pro gram to recruit some more members to Student Services. Then I’d set up a new organizational plan which is designed to inform every member what needs to be done and specifi cally what their individual job is. The main idea is to produce some action. Why should students pick you over any of the other candidates? Recently we haven’t seen many direct benefits coming out of student services. I think the committee has not performed to its potential. My experience has shown me that what Student Services can accomplish is almost endless if properly organized and motivated and I’m willing to work to see that done. What do you as a student owe to the student body as an elected offi cial, and what does it owe to you? My responsibility to the student body is a year of hard work to do more than an adequate job directed toward the goals the students want at Texas A&M. Yet student govern ment always can use more input from students as to what these goals are. As president of the American Student Federation, I have come in contact with and dealt with student leaders from across the nation. My communications with them have provided me with a unique insight into the problems most students face and possible solutions to these problems. I feel this experience coupled with my four years of student government service to Texas A&M will allow me to relate to the student body in a positive and productive manner. What do you see as the major problems and issues confronting the VP for external affairs next year? The major problem we are facing in external affairs is a lack of student input. It is crucial that we make the student body aware of the different pressing educational issues of the day and then actively solicit stu dents’ opinions on them. After iden tifying students’ views, we must represent them forcefully by having Texas A&M play a greater role in the national and state student or ganizations it is affiliated with, as well as by developing independent means of influence. What changes, if any, do you plan to make as VP for external af fairs? I hope to play a key role in de veloping a student government newsletter this letter would inform students about legislative affairs be fore they are acted upon instead of after. The students are paying for student government through their student service fees and they have a right to know what is happening in that area. In addition, I intend for external affairs to work on develop ing mechanisms that would allow Texas A&M a more direct voice into the formulation of educational policies. Why should students pick you over any of the other candidates? There are several reasons why I should be chosen over any of my opponents. (1) I have four years ex perience in working in external af fairs. (2) I have represented Texas A&M students many times, includ ing several occasions on Capitol Hill. (3) I have been an officer in the state JEB HENSARLING and national student organizations A&M is a member of, and my knowl edge in this area will allow me to maximize A&M’s voice in them. (4) Finally, I have spent most of my life in College Station. I know Texas A&M quite well and am dedicated to preserving its traditions and working for its progress.
