Smith unopposed Waller runs alone
for Bryan mayor for Bryan council
RICHARD SMITH
NAME: Richard Smith
RACE: Mayor of Bryan (unop
posed)
Real estate broker, B.S.
Mechanical Engineering from
Texas A&M, two-term incum
bent, 12-year resident of Bryan,
40 years old.
Should Bryan keep the 1-cent
city sales tax on utility bills? Why?
Yes. The revenue is needed for
city services.
Should the city and school district
tax offices be combined? No. I
would favor a county-wide tax ap
praisal office.
What do you think of civil service
for police and firemen?
I do not favor civil service for the
reasons stated in the position paper
adopted on March 23, 1979, by the
Bryan City Council.
Should Bryan have a private am
bulance service, a city service, or
cooperate in a county wide service?
Why?
A city operated ambulance would
be best.

NAME: Peyton Waller
RACE: Place 3 (unopposed)
Self-employed, two years of col
lege, incumbent, 14-year resi
dent of Bryan, 51 years old.
Should Bryan keep the 1-cent
city sales tax on utility bills? Why?
Yes, so that all citizens may par
ticipate in the cost of city govern
ment.
Should the city and school district
tax offices be combined?
There should be some sort of tax
office consolidation to avoid duplica
tion of services I have suggested city
and county offices.
What do you think of civil service
for police and firemen?
I am against civil service for any
group — it simply creates waste.
Should Bryan have a private am
bulance service, a city service, or
cooperate in a county wide service?
Why?
We have tried to get a county
wide service, but we have just
created a city service to serve the
city of Bryan and the north end of
the county.
What are your pet projects, if
any?
