While dragons, sorcerers and
other unusual beings were attend
ing the AggieCon X upstairs in the
Memorial Student Center Friday
night, another not-so-strange event
was taking place downstairs — the
MSC Recreation Committee Table
Tennis Tournament.
Ngo Le Van demonstrated both
skill and concentration Friday as he
won the tournament. Second place
went to Ed Chan, and James Huang
placed third.
The tournament was open to any
one associated with the University,
but when entries closed and play
began at 6 p.m., there were no
women in the tournament.
Tournament co-chairmen Mike
Bearrow and Vince Vaden, both
members of the A&M Table Tennis
Club and the Table Tennis Team
were pleased with the turnout and
the caliber of the participants.
“These guys are of great quality,”
Bearrow said.’ They are the best
players that we have on campus.”
“ There is a table tennis club and
team on campus, but we know that
there are some more people that are
here at the University who like table
tennis,” Vaden said. “We wanted to
get some quality players out for the
tournament.”
And both Bearrow and Vaden feel
that they did get fine players in
volved in the tournament. Along
with a few participants who are on
the team, there were players who
just play for fun.
Jaimie Villarroel, a team member
from Brazil, is one of the seasoned
players — he has been playing for
nine years.
I practice a couple" of hours three
times a week,” Villarroel said. “The
strongest part of my game is my
forehand — I use a lot of topspin.”
While Villarroel is the type of
player who likes to be aggressive
and get the first offensive move in,
Andy Chu, another team member,
steps back and takes on the defen-
“I’ve been playing for about two
years,” Chu said. “But I practice
daily for about two hours.”
Practice is an important part of
the game, but tournament cham
pion Ngo Le Van said that there are
many mor factors. Ngo began play
ing table tennis five years ago while
in West Berlin.
“Table tennis not only takes a lot
of practice, but it also takes muscles,
concentration, skill and reflexes,”
Ngo said. ”ln fact, it takes more
concentration than skill.”
The next meeting of the Table
Tennis Club will be 5 p.m. Tuesday
in Room 256 of G. Rollie White Col-
