Singing in the rain? No, we’re running
in the third annual Texas AirM marathon
About 650 runners weathered the
storm Saturday morning to compete
in the third annual Aggie Marathon,
sponsored by Phi Epsilon Kappa,
the society of health and physical
education majors. There was a lower
turnout than last year, when close to
950 runners entered. The Corps of
Cadets’ annual March to the Brazos
was scheduled the same day and of
ficials in the P.E. department
speculated that about 300 cadets
usually compete in the marathon.
Dr. George Jessup, associate pro
fessor in the department, said there
was heavy rain at the beginning of
the race but “just about quit by the
time we got to three miles and was
not a problem after that.”
Runners are shown below at the
halfway point of the 26-mile course
and at right is Tinker Murray, the
winner of the event. Murray, a
graduate student in health and phys
ical education, also won the meet
last year.

ing lines aren’t the only thing
as A&M University has plenty of
Hit also runs long on talent.
Wfou probably thought you saw it
all last week at the talent show in
the Memorial Student Center. But
hold on, Moses Hall had another
200 people sitting in a line against
Keathley Hall watching their annual
talent show Sunday.
Jwhe 14 acts in the show were
judged by audience applause. Tal
ent ranged from bands and singers
tolkits.
■■
Cash prizes were awarded in two
categories: music and miscellane
ous. Trophies were awarded for
backgammon, checkers, and 42
tournament champions. Competi
tion in those events were held
throughout last week.
“All this was to promote dorm
spirit, friendliness and all that
stuff,” Jay Gilbert, Moses resident
and master of ceremonies, said dur
ing the performance.
Twelve student acts were signed
up in advance, Gilbert said. One
entertainer, “Joe California,’’
moved by the performance, stepped
up to perform (and almost won).
And then there was “Willie.”
The show has become an annual
event for “Willie” who also partici
pated last year. “Willie,” who has
worked for the maintenance de
partment at Texas A&M for 11 years
said, “I enjoy coming out here and
playing my harmonica.” He walked
away with the show last year with
first place, a member from the audi
ence said, and placed third Sunday.
Another winner. The Pillage
People, came clad in military uni
forms, warm-up suits, boots, hard
hats and flannel shirts. They sang —
well, rather performed their way to
first place in the miscellaneous divi
sion. They were fully equipped with
hammers, axes and gym weights.
