Jupiter s lightning adds
to chances of life there
United Press International
TUCSON, Ariz. —The Voyager 1
space probe discovered lightning in
the complex atmosphere of Jupiter
and is raising the remote possibility
that simple forms of life might exist
in the giant planet’s atmosphere, a
project scientist said Tuesday.
Dr. Bradford A. Smith, head of
the planetary probe’s imaging team,
said at a news conference that the
discovery of very strong “super
bolts’ of lightning in the Jovian at
mosphere indicates a possibility of
the formation of highly complex or
ganic molecules that are precursors
of life.
Smith, a University of Arizona as
tronomer, said for life to exist, there
must be a steady, high concentration
of these complex molecules. This
appears highly unlikely in the swirl
ing atmosphere of the planet, he
said. The molecules are probably
circulated into the lower atmosphere
where the extremely high tempera
tures would destroy them, Smith
said.
But if there are pockets of the at
mosphere which escape the rapid
circulation, the high conceal
of organic molecules andtltj
bility of life could exist, lies
