Clements’s new adminis tration, says the former head of the Commission on the Status of Women in Texas. Karen Dill Bowerman was direc tor of the commission until about two weeks ago when the governor dismissed the staff. The commission was established by executive order in 1977. Its pur pose was to establish statistics con cerning the status of women in the state, and make recommendations on women s programs. They had already managed to or ganize a state network of women in professional areas to provide advice and recommend policies, Bower- man says. for Tax Deferred Annuities and Statue thief urged to be Indian giver Optional Retirement represented by H. The American cigar store Indian, a 93-inch tall wood carving, dis appeared from the corridor of the Rudder Conference Center some time between 1 a.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday, according to Bill Hensel, manager of the University Center. The statue, valued at $1,700, was last seen by Aggie Cinema work ers after the Saturday night Military Ball. The statue had been moved from its regular place to the south end of the hall because of the ball. A cleanup crew realized it was missing Sunday afternoon. The building and grounds were searched Sunday, and the Univer sity police were called Monday morning. Russ McDonald, University police chief, said that because of the insured statue’s value, the theft is a third-degree felony, punishable by two to 10 years imprisonment and a $5,000 fine. The commission also published a manual which is being used in social work education by various schools. Bowerman says she was to id the commission was being eliminated for “budgetary priorities.” “To me,” says Bowerman, “that simply means that this particular area at this time, was simply not a priority for the new administration.” The dissolving of the commission is a great loss to women, Bowerman says, since it was the only organiza tion of its type in the state. Women must overcome many ob stacles, both socially and politically, according to Bowerman. She adds that this can only be done if they receive assistance from the leader ship within the state. “A structure within the confines of state government, where the needs for women’s programs and policies can be channeled, is neces sary,” Bowerman says. She adds that sometimes it is up to the federal government to provide assistance when the state does not take action in problem areas. “However,” says Bowerman, “it is my personal hope that we in Texas won’t have to look for national lead ership in this area.” She says she does not know how good a chance there is that the commission will be reinstated. * * * * * * * £ * * * * * * * SHANE STEAD Glassblower March 5-9 9 a.m.-5 p.m * * * * * 5 -■WV-" r ALTERATIONS 1 IN THE GRAND TRADITION OF OLD TEXAS WHERE MOTHER TAUGHT DAUGHTER THE FINE ART OF SEWING — SO HELEN MARIE TAUGHT EDITH MARIE THE SECRETS OF SEWING AND ALTERATIONS. ‘DON’T GIVE UP — WE’LL MAKE IT FIT!” AT WELCH’S CLEANERS, WE NOT ONLY SERVE AS AN EXCEL LENT DRY CLEANERS BUT WE SPECIALIZE IN ALTERING HARD TO FIT EVENING DRESSES, TAPERED, SHIRTS, JEAN HEMS, WATCH POCKETS.
