a liability to the Teacher Retirement
System.
Retirees received higher benefits
without having made contributions
at the higher rate, causing the liabil
ity, he said.
The legislation would eliminate
the liability and “keep retirement
benefits more in pace with actual
earnings.”
Employees pay 6.65 percent of
their salaries to the fund and the
state pays 7.5 percent. The proposal
also would raise the state’s contribu
tion to 8.5 percent of the employee’s
salaries.
The bill would also change sur
vivor benefits from a $500 lump sum
and $75 per month to a $1,500 lump
sum and $100 per month. Be
neficiaries with children under age
18 would receive $200 a month, up
from $150 a month.
If the legislation were passed,
those who started receiving benefits
before March 31, 1969, would get a
20 percent increase. Those whose
benefits have started since then but
before Sept. 1, 1973, wouldj
percent increase.
A 5 percent increase wo
given to those who began n
benefits after Sept. 1, 1973,
fore May 31, 1977.
