William T. “Bill” Moore, D-Bryan, and Rep. Bill Presnal, D-Bryan, have intro duced is passed. The proposed legislation would remove the $25,000 ceiling on which teacher retirement deposits are made. No deposits, and sub sequently no retirement benefits, are allowed for wages above that amount. Henry D. Retirees received higher benefits without having made contributions at the higher rate, causing the liabil ity, he said. The legislation would eliminate the liability and “keep retirement benefits more in pace with actual earnings.” Employees pay 6.65 percent of their salaries to the fund and the state pays 7.5 percent. The proposal also would raise the state’s contribu tion to 8.5 percent of the employee’s salaries. The bill would also change sur vivor benefits from a $500 lump sum and $75 per month to a $1,500 lump sum and $100 per month. Be neficiaries with children under age 18 would receive $200 a month, up from $150 a month. If the legislation were passed, those who started receiving benefits before March 31, 1969, would get a 20 percent increase. Those whose benefits have started since then but before Sept. 1, 1973, wouldj percent increase. A 5 percent increase wo given to those who began n benefits after Sept. 1, 1973, fore May 31, 1977.
