Texas A&M’s men’s track squad
iuffered another cruel blow earlier
■week when freshman distance
aner Henning Gericke of South
frica unexpectedly left for home,
e didn’t know he was un-
ipy,” Coach Charlie Thomas said.
“And we didn’t know he was leaving
, s ii ' "ntil he had already packed and
ft. ’ Gericke had run a 4:03 mile as a
, high schooler in South Africa.
Earlier in the year, Texas A&M
g^^Hbeen weakened by the losses of
Mike Mosley and Arthur Williams,
j Mosley is passing up track this spring
to concentrate on football and
being

s
next
Williams gave up track and trans
ferred to North Texas to concentrate
on basketball.
The Aggies lost a dual meet to Rice
last Saturday, 74-62, but competed
without Curtis Dickey who had tied
for fourth in the national AAU 60-
yard dash in New York the night be
fore.
This week the Aggies will be in the
Border Olympics in Laredo. Rice is
the defending meet champion and
the Aggies came in second last year.
Thomas said that ace quarter-
miler Leslie Kerr will run the 220
this week instead of the 440.
“We think Steve Willis can win
the 440 so we re going to try to score
high in the 220 with Kerr, ” the Aggie
coach said. “Dickey will run the
100-yard dash and on the 440 relay. ”
The 440 relay will have Willis,
Kerr, Vernon Pittman and Dickey,
in that order, with Emerson Brown
as top alternate. The mile relay will
have Ron Wilson, Pittman, Kerr and
Willis, with Karl Figgs as top alter
nate.

1 AjSTIN — The Southern
f@r|i)dist University Mustangs,
jpthfcerhaps the strongest team in
s generation-long domination of
fout^iwest Conference swimming,
Be.sifter its 23rd consecutive league
^neginning tonight in the SWC
Wimming championships.
I SMU is undefeated in dual meet
pmpetition this year and upset
bwlrful teams from Indiana and
outhern California to earn consid-
fation as perhaps one of the top five
fains in the country.
|As isual, the Mustangs strongest
)m|)etition will come from the
!exas Longhorns, who will host the
leet in one of the world’s finest
virlming facilities. SMU whipped
■ earlier this year in a dual meet.
The Mustangs roster is loaded
with talent that could produce points
in the NCAA meet.
Greg Kraus holds the conference’s
best time in the 200-yard freestyle
while SMU’s Ken Brenton, Bart E)ay
and Kim Davis are the swimmers to
beat in the backstroke, breaststroke
and butterfly competition.
The Mustangs will be heavy fa
vorites to win all three relay events
and should be dominant in the diving
as well.
Davis should also be a key factor in
the short freestyle races, but Arkan
sas’ Jerry Spencer will probably chal
lenge in both the 50 and 100-yard
freestyles.
Competition will run through
Saturday at the Texas Swimming
Center.

San Antonio Light, but he declined
to provide any specifics because the
talks are progressing “on a day-to-
day basis.”
McCombs, a principal owner of
the Spurs, is credited with being the
prime mover in obtaining an NBA
franchise for the nation’s 10th largest
city.
McCombs indicated he was not
the only party interested in buying
the Astros but said he does not know
the identities of the other prospec
tive buyers.
“Anytime you’ve got a major
league baseball team, and anything
as exciting as a leasehold on the op
eration of the Astrodome, people are
going to be interested in it,”
McCombs said.
Coach Bob Ellis and the Texas
A&M men’s golf team will also be in
Laredo this weekend competing in
the Border Olympics tournament,
which will take place Saturday and

placed third overall in the competi
tion. Mark Ivy lassoed the Aggies’
only first place finish with a win in
the calf roping competition.
Rugby
Despite the mud and the cold, the
Texas A&M women’s rugby team
took third place in the 12th annual
