WASHINGTON — More than
half of the nation’s motorists exceed
the 55 mph speed limit on clear
roadways, but few of them are driv
ing more than 65 mph, the Federal
Highway Administration reports.
As a result of motorists’ heavy
feet, more than 8 million speeding
tickets were issued nationwide for
the fiscal year ending Oct. 1.
The information from state high
way officials is reported annually
under the 55 mph national speed
limit law. The speeds are monitored
only on flat stretches of roads posted
for 55 mph under good conditions
and do not include rush hour traffic
jams or hazardous roadways.
Five states had more than 70 per
cent of monitored traffic going over
the speed limit. They were Kansas,
72 percent; Missouri, 71; Texas, 77;
Vermont, 73, and Wyoming, 74.
Virginia had only 30 percent of its
monitored traffic exceeding 55 mph.
California issued the most speed
ing tickets of any state — more than
1 million citations.
The data indicate that only a small
percentage of traffic — 10 percent in
most states and a high of 18 percent
in Texas — exceeds 65 mph.
Starting this year, states failing to
report that 30 percent of their high
way traffic is moving within the 55
mph or less could lose up to 5 per
cent of certain federal highway
funds. In 1983, 70 percent of re
ported traffic must be in compliance
with the speed limit or states could
lose 10 percent of those funds.
States refusing to pass

NOTICE TO SENIORS
Did you know 4 out of 5 college seniors flunk their
first 2 job interviews? More jobs are lost not for lack
of qualifications but because the student flunked
the interview.
For 26 years I was a campus recruiter and inter
viewer. Now, I am willing to share these behind the
scene experiences with you. To best do this, I have
written a book entitled, HOW NOT TO FLUNK
YOUR JOB INTERVIEW.
The book covers subjects such as: What is an
interview?; purpose of the interview; preparation;
where to find information about the company inter
view ing you; 29 interv iew tips; 87 quest ions that are
normally asked by the interviewer; sample evalua
tion form; 45 reasons why students fail their inter
view; list of questions you should and should not
ask the interviewer and much more.
Many students think their degree and a well written
resume is all that is needed to land that first job. No
so!!! Just how you come across during the eyeball
to eyeball interview is the deciding (actor. |f
