HOUSTON — Houston Stratford
running back Craig James, top Class
AAAA rusher in Texas history,
signed with SMU Thursday night —
more than 24 hours after he had
originally been expected to commit
himself to attending the private Dal
las college.
SMU coach Ron Meyer said he
was “delighted.”
Meyer called James a “tremem
dous asset to the SMU football pro
gram. We re delighted, he said
while celebrating at James home.
Wednesday was the first day high
school seniors could sign scholarship
agreements binding within the
Southwest Conference. Such
agreements are not binding na
tionally until a “national letter is
signed next Wednesday.
James hedged Thursday on his
commitment to SMU because of in
decision within his family brought
on by the intense effort of recruit
ers.
James said recruiters had used
everything they could to persuade
him not to go to SMU. He said his
parents were so upset by some of
the recruiters’ comments that he
had delayed his signing with the
Mustangs.
James’ father, Charlie Vickers,
said Thursday night “other coaches
of different schools had indicated
SMU might be placed on probation
during the upcoming season.
“We’ve checked into all the pos
sibilities of SMU being on probation
and we’ve found out there s nothing
to back up any statement anyone has
made or anything,’ Vickers said.
