Battalion photo by Douglas Heck A&M professor tests cancer drug By PATTI SHOQUIST Battalion Reporter Dr. George C.Y. Chiou, head of the medical pharmacology de partment at Texas A&M University, says he has tested a drug which effectively fights neuroblastoma, a nerve cancer that affects children. In 1975, while at the University of Florida, Chiou developed the drug bromoacetylcholine (BrACh), which inhibits the growth of neuroblastoma and prolongs the lives of lab mice. The disease results from failure of the nerve cells to develop and function properly as the body grows. Chiou said the disease can be controlled if detected early; however, the cancer is usually fatal be cause it spreads rapidly. The American Cancer Society had granted $32,276 to Chiou’s re search program. “In this study we want to find the drug regimen that will best treat the disease, so we can determine what amounts of injections to use in humans,” he said. Researchers are concerned about the possible side effects of BrACh. Chiou said the drug may cause excessive salivation and ab dominal pain; however, when combined with another drug, atropine, adverse effects can be eliminated. Anticipating that testing of lab mice will be completed next year, followed by prompt approval from the Food and Drug Administra tion, Chiou said the drug will be ready for testing on humans by 1981. Judge suing court United Press International PITTSBURGH — When Judge Ralph H. Smith Jr. got a parking ticket, he decided to handle the matter without revealing that he is a judge. Now the Allegheny County Common Pleas Court judge is suing everyone involved — not because of the ticket, he said, but because of the way he was treated by city em ployees. . The judge said the treatment was humiliating and his rights were vio lated. Smith was given a parking ticket Nov. 22 and appeared for a hearing Jan. 9. Although he was 15 minutes early, he said, he was “berated” for being late. Smith said when he pointed out that he was early, the clerk “im mediately demanded” that (he) sur render his driver s license and the evidence he brought with him for his defense. The judge said he was told he would not receive a hearing until he surrendered his license. Last Tuesday, he said, he re ceived a mailed notice warning a warrant would be issued for his ar rest for allegedly failing to pay the parking fine. On Monday, Smith filed suit against City Magistrate Louis Dadowski, Traffic Court clerk Angela Marasco, police officer THE BATTALION Page THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1979 Hubert Sinclair, Constable William McMeekin and the traffic court it self. The suit charged that Smith was subjected to “intentional, deliberate and malicious conduct,” and that his rights were violated under the state and federal constitutions.
