SEMINOLE, Texas — A list of
700 Mennonite immigrants
threatened with deportation will be
compiled by the Immigration and
Naturalization Service, and is ex
pected to be used in proposed legis
lation to allow them to remain in the
United States.
Richard Norton of the INS re
gional office in Dallas said the listing
is only “an account, for lack of a bet
ter word — not a formal investiga
tion — of the immigrants expected
to benefit from legislation by Sen.
Lloyd Bentsen, D-Texas.
Norton said INS officials Tuesday
would begin a two-day accounting
requested from Washington to de
termine the number and identities
of the Mennonites.
Officials said the list is expected
to be used in conjunction with a bill

allow the Canadian and Mexican
Mennonites to remain in the U.S.
The Mennonites, who oppose
oath-taking, infant baptism and mili
tary combat, arrived in west Texas
in February 1977 with plans to es
tablish a religious community on
6,400 acres of farmland.
They expected their
multimillion-dollar outlay in farm
land and equipment would qualify
them for investor status and perma
nent residency. However, it did not
and they have lived under the threat
of deportation for more than a year.
A private hill introduced in the
sect’s behalf by Bei\tsen last year
languished in Congress, and died
with adjournment. It did, however,
forestall deportation proceedings
until Feb. 1.
In the interim, Mennonite heads
of household and single adults
sought unsuccessfully to find “certi
fiable jobs — ones that could not
be filled by Americans — in order to
gain a chance for permanent resi
dency status.
As Feb. 1 approached, the Men
nonites again were threatened with
immediate deportation. However,
Bentsen on Jan. 31 wrote to INS
Commissioner Leonel J. Castillo,
saying he would introduce another
private bill in Mennonites’ behalf
this year. The letter again forestal
led actin against the Mennonites.

have given up hope of making land
