In alev^
epin by Salas in the 190-pound
match was welcome relief for
nil coach Bill Kraemer, who
een his Pioneers blow an early
lead to the gaining Aggies.
"Up until then, I was concerned
because we had been trading
matches back and fourth and not
getting very far ahead,” Kraemer
said. "But that pin really picked up
the tempo for us.
And pick up the tempo it did, as
Mike Betz won a convincing 17-5
decision over Texas A&M’s Curtis
Templet in the heavyweight class
match that ended the meet and
boosted Carroll’s final total to 30
points.
Aggie coach Pete Servon was
philosophical about his team’s loss.
"We came into this meet knowing
that Carroll had a reputation of
being a tough team to beat,” Servon
said. “I think our guys wrestled pre
tty good except for those two pins on
Panova and (Steve) Tyler. That was
something I just didn’t expect to
happen. Those guys from Carroll
are smart as well as tough and they
just don’t get pinned. I think right
now what we need is just a little
more experience.”
The final outcome of the meet
over-shadowed a fine performance
by Aggie Bob Santini. In his match
with Dave Monreal in the 167-
pound class, Santini was in total
control from start to finish as he won
the decision 15-2. With a showing
that included two near-falls and four
takedowns, he provided Texas A&M
with its best win of the night and
contributed five of the team's 15
points.
Other Aggie wins included two
closely fought 5-2 decisions by Billy
Kelvey and Blake Purcell and a 13-4
romp by John Sweat! in the 142-
pound class.
Besides the match won by Salas,
Carroll had two other wins by a pin.
In the 118-pound class, freshman
Mike Seipel beat Texas A&M’s Rick
Edgmon in a time of 4:45. The 158-
pound match saw Doug Mueller nail
down Steve Tyler after an elapsed
time of 7:21.
Although the Aggies have not al
ways been lucky with teams from
out of state, they have done excep
tionally well in state. Coming off a
year that saw seven Texas A&M
wrestlers capture honors as state
champs in their individual classes,
the team has so far gone undefeated
in Texas play with an 11-0 record.
That record will be on the line
next week as they host Southwest
Texas State University and Richland
Junior College in a tri-meet at De-
Ware Fieldhouse on Feb. 14.
