Schiffhauer Alan L. Stacell Elenor R. Cox Paul N. Christensen Manuel M. Davenport Norman S. Grabo Larry A. Hickman Diane Strommer Aggies shoot down Mustangs 92-56 By DAVID BOGGAN Battalion Sports Editor There was a movie made a couple of years back which asked the ques tion “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?” Wednesday night the Texas A&M basketball team answered that question as the Aggies shot the wounded SMU Mustangs right off the floor of G. Rollie White Col iseum 92-56. An extremely humane Shelby Metcalf showed mercy on the Ponies, who were playing without their star freshman, Billy Allen. The Aggie coach had all five of his hot handed starters as well as David Britton, the game’s leading scorer, on the bench with 3:45 left in the game. Texas A&M led at that point 81-49. “When all of the starters are on the bench we know we’ve done good,” Aggie guard Dave Goff said. And what do the first five do to oc cupy their time on the sideline after their job is done? “Most of the time we talk about the class we re going to tomorrow,” Britton answered. Uh, right, David. More likely Britton was thinking about the score the Aggies were about to settle with the Mustangs. SMU gave Texas A&M one of its two conference losses earlier in the season. “We knew we were one of the best teams in the conference, and we lost to them after they got beat by Rice,” Britton said of the Aggies’ 78-76 loss in Dallas. “Now the whole team is playing good. We re relating to each other and it’s fun. “Before the conference games, we were playing powerhouses and it was easy getting up for them and it was fun. We were traveling and we weren’t going to school. It was like the NBA. Then we came in and had trouble getting up for some of our conference games. Now we re get ting our spark back.” The Aggies were sparked to an early lead when the Mustangs failed to hit a field goal until almost 7Vfe minutes were gone in the first half. Texas A&M led 39-25 at halftime. “We were loose and it helped us tonight,” Goff said. “In the first 10 minutes we weren’t playing that good. But because we were loose we didn’t have to worry about it. The Aggies didn’t have much to worry about all night. The Mustangs never got closer to the lead than the 0-0 tie they were spotted at the be ginning of the game. “They would have had a better game with Billy Allen in there,” Vernon Smith said. Allen, who av erages 15 points per game, was sidelined with pneumonia. “He might have shot some Shots those other guards wouldn’t shoot." Metcalf said that things would not have changed much even if Allen had suited up for the Ponies. “It hurt them, there’s no doubt about it,” the Aggie coach said. “But I don’t think it made that much dif ference. “I think David Britton is getting used to the conference now and he realizes that it takes a little more in tensity. He is getting smarter and more serious. The nice thing about having David on the bench is that he can substitute for everybody out there.” Britton came off the bench and led the Aggies with 18 points. Smith scored 16, Rudy Woods had 15 and Tyrone Ladson hit 10 as Texas A&M made 52.9 percent of its field goals in the game. Brad Branson led SMU with 11 points as the Mustangs hit 30.9 percent from the floor. The Aggies out-rebounded the Ponies 46-33. Metcalf said that the reason Texas A&M lost to SMU the first time stemmed from the fact that the Ag gies lost some intensity after doing well in the early-season ments. “We came back and just work hard enough," he turned it around because*; back to work. Texas prettyei our attention. SMUshouldk our attention. “We’ve played with more sity since the Texas game, fense has really picked up. The Aggies now must he ton and travel to Arkansas® Tech before the Longhomsu College Station for a rematet calf, however, is not looldij Saturday. “I’m not looking anyfiirtie Houston, he said. "Were take them one at a time, or not, some of his players ing to talk about the time can get at the Longhorns im familiar dark alley. "Yea, they’ve been lately. Smith said of the ami leaders. "But they’ve good in the Drum.” "Yea, Britton adds, "Hie to O’ Heart (Baylor’s HeartO Coliseum) and had a They just caught us at time. "We want those diam SWC diamonds. And it jus boil down to us and — v4 — oh yea, Texas.” Britton always did have with words. with rustle BOX SCORE SMU (56) llarriN 2 4-6 8. Branson 3 5-6 II, Fi , ' . 6-6 10, Hale 1 2-24.
